Job Description
Job Title Yard Dog / Yard Jockey / Spotter Driver Job Summary The Yard Dog is responsible for safely operating a yard tractor (terminal tractor) to move trailers within the facility yard. This role ensures trailers are positioned at loading docks, staging areas, and parking locations while maintaining safety, efficiency, and communication with warehouse and transportation personnel. Key Responsibilities Move trailers between loading docks, staging areas, and parking locations. Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of yard equipment. Verify trailer numbers and ensure trailers are placed at the correct dock doors. Inspect trailers for visible damage and report maintenance issues. Maintain accurate records of trailer movements and yard inventory. Communicate with dispatchers, warehouse staff, and drivers regarding trailer assignments. Follow all company safety policies and DOT regulations as applicable. Keep the yard organized to maximize operational efficiency. Assist with securing trailers, connecting and disconnecting airlines, and ensuring trailers are properly chocked. Respond promptly to changing operational priorities. Qualifications High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Previous experience operating a yard tractor, semi-truck, or commercial vehicle preferred. Valid driver's license required; CDL A required with 2 years' experience. Previous 3rd shift experience. Ability to work in various weather conditions. Strong attention to safety and detail. Good communication and teamwork skills. Ability to work flexible schedules, including overnights, weekends, and holidays if needed. Physical Requirements Frequently enter and exit the yard tractor. Lift up to 50 pounds occasionally. Walk, stand, bend, climb, and reach throughout the shift. Work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Preferred Skills Experience in warehouse or distribution center operations. Must have knowledge of trailer spotting procedures. Must have familiarity with safety regulations and equipment inspections. Basic computer or handheld scanner experience. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Work Environment Truck Terminals Warehouses Typical Schedule Full-time 8-12 hour shifts Overnight, weekends, and holidays as required
