Job Description

The Mule Forklift Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating a mule forklift and other designated material-handling equipment to move, position, load, and unload vehicles, containers, trailers, and other freight within the warehouse and yard. This position plays an important role in maintaining safe yard operations, supporting loading and unloading activities, and ensuring freight is handled accurately and without damage. The ideal candidate is safety-conscious, dependable, attentive to detail, and able to work effectively in a fast-paced warehouse and yard environment.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities Safely operate a mule forklift and other authorized material-handling equipment. Move containers, trailers, vehicles, pallets, and other freight as directed by management. Position equipment and freight accurately for loading, unloading, storage, and transportation. Assist with the movement and staging of vehicles within the yard and warehouse. Inspect the mule forklift before each shift and report any mechanical, safety, or maintenance issues immediately. Follow all company safety policies, operating procedures, and OSHA requirements. Maintain safe operating speeds and appropriate distances from employees, vehicles, structures, equipment, and other property. Use required personal protective equipment (PPE), including safety vest, safety footwear, seatbelt, and other equipment required by company policy. Ensure loads are properly positioned and secured before moving. Maintain awareness of pedestrians, other forklifts, trucks, containers, buildings, fences, and other obstacles. Follow designated traffic patterns and yard procedures. Communicate effectively with warehouse, yard, transportation, and operations personnel. Assist with maintaining an organized and safe yard and warehouse environment. Report damaged freight, equipment, property, or safety hazards immediately. Complete required inspection logs, equipment checklists, and other operational documentation accurately. Assist with loading and unloading operations as assigned. Maintain the cleanliness and general condition of assigned equipment. Follow instructions from supervisors and managers regarding the movement and placement of freight. Attend required safety meetings and training. Perform other duties as assigned by management. Safety Responsibilities Safety is a primary responsibility of this position. The Mule Forklift Operator is expected to: Operate equipment only when properly trained and authorized. Never operate equipment recklessly, at excessive speeds, or in an unsafe manner. Never use a forklift while distracted or while using a cell phone. Always wear the required PPE. Always use the forklift seatbelt when operating equipment. Maintain a clear line of sight when traveling and use appropriate procedures when visibility is restricted. Yield to pedestrians and maintain safe clearance from people and property. Immediately report accidents, near misses, property damage, equipment damage, or unsafe conditions. Stop work and notify a supervisor if an unsafe condition cannot be corrected safely. Qualifications Previous forklift or mule operator experience preferred. Forklift certification or ability to successfully complete company-required forklift training and certification. Experience working in a warehouse, shipping yard, port, logistics, or transportation environment preferred. Ability to safely operate heavy equipment in confined and outdoor areas. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Basic ability to read and complete equipment inspection forms and operational documentation. Strong attention to detail and safety awareness. Reliable attendance and punctuality. Ability to work independently and as part of a team. Physical Requirements Ability to sit and operate a forklift for extended periods. Ability to enter and exit equipment safely. Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, climb, and reach as required. Ability to lift and carry items weighing up to approximately 50 pounds when necessary. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions. Ability to work around moving vehicles, heavy equipment, containers, and other warehouse/yard hazards. Good visual and auditory awareness necessary to safely operate equipment. Work Environment This position operates primarily in a warehouse, vehicle yard, and/or container yard environment. The employee may be exposed to outdoor weather conditions, moving vehicles, heavy equipment, noise, dust, fumes, and changing temperatures. The employee is expected to maintain a professional, safety-focused work environment and comply with all company policies and procedures. Performance Expectations Success in this position will be measured by: Safe operation of the mule forklift and other equipment. Compliance with all safety policies and procedures. Accurate and efficient movement of freight and vehicles. Prevention of damage to vehicles, containers, equipment, buildings, fences, and other property. Proper completion of equipment inspections and required documentation. Maintaining a clean and organized work area. Reliable attendance and punctuality. Effective communication with supervisors and team members. Ability to follow instructions and established operating procedures.
