Job Description

Position Summary The Patient Transportation Van Driver is responsible for safely and courteously transporting patients to and from the inpatient rehabilitation hospital, medical appointments, residences, and other approved destinations. The driver provides dependable transportation while maintaining patient dignity, privacy, and safety at all times. This position works closely with admissions, nursing, case management, and other hospital staff to coordinate patient transportation and ensure timely arrivals and departures. Essential Functions & Responsibilities Safely operate hospital transportation vans in accordance with hospital policies and applicable Louisiana laws and regulations. Transport patients to and from the hospital, medical appointments, outpatient services, residences, and other authorized locations. Assist patients with entering and exiting the vehicle, using appropriate safety precautions and equipment. Secure patients, wheelchairs, walkers, and other mobility equipment appropriately during transportation. Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle safety inspections and report mechanical or safety concerns promptly. Maintain the cleanliness, sanitation, and general condition of the assigned vehicle. Maintain accurate transportation logs, trip documentation, and other required paperwork as applicable. Communicate effectively with patients, family members, hospital staff, medical offices, and other transportation contacts. Demonstrate patience, professionalism, courtesy, and respect when working with patients who may have physical, cognitive, communication, or mobility limitations. Follow hospital procedures regarding patient identification, confidentiality, infection prevention, emergency response, and incident reporting. Notify appropriate hospital personnel of changes in a patient's condition or any transportation-related concern observed during a trip. Follow designated routes and schedules while allowing appropriate time for patient loading, unloading, and assistance. Respond appropriately to vehicle accidents, patient emergencies, or other unexpected situations and immediately notify the appropriate hospital personnel. Maintain required driver documentation with HR Department and report any changes that could adversely affect driving eligibility. Assist with other non-transportation related duties as assigned. Patient Safety Responsibilities The driver is expected to maintain a strong focus on patient safety throughout every trip.
This includes:
1. Confirming patient identity according to hospital procedures before transportation. 2. Ensuring mobility devices and other equipment are properly secured. 3. Using seat belts and other required safety equipment. Following safe driving practices and posted speed limits. 4. Never operating the vehicle while impaired, fatigued, distracted, or otherwise unable to drive safely. 5. P Reporting accidents, injuries, near misses, patient incidents, or vehicle problems immediately. 6. Maintaining patient confidentiality and protecting patient information in accordance with hospital policy and applicable privacy requirements. Qualifications Required High school diploma or equivalent preferred. Valid Louisiana driver's license in good standing. Safe driving record consistent with hospital insurance requirements. Ability to safely operate a passenger van or similar vehicle. Ability to communicate effectively in English. Ability to interact professionally with patients, families, visitors, and healthcare staff. Ability to assist patients with mobility needs within the physical requirements of the position. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions and hospital safety procedures. Preferred Previous experience transporting patients, working in healthcare, or operating a medical transportation vehicle. Experience working with patients with disabilities, mobility limitations, or neurological or orthopedic conditions. CPR/BLS certification or willingness to obtain certification if required by the hospital. Knowledge of local roads and healthcare facilities in the service area. Physical Requirements The position requires the ability to: Sit and operate a vehicle for extended periods. Frequently enter and exit the transportation vehicle. Assist patients with boarding and exiting the vehicle. Push, pull, maneuver, and secure wheelchairs and other mobility equipment. Bend, stoop, reach, and perform other movements necessary to assist patients and maintain the vehicle. Respond appropriately during patient or vehicle emergencies. Perform duties in varying weather and traffic conditions. Work Environment Work is performed both inside the hospital and outdoors while operating or assisting with hospital transportation vehicles. The position may involve exposure to varied weather conditions, traffic, vehicle noise, and patients with infectious or other medical conditions. The employee must follow all hospital infection-control, safety, and personal protective equipment requirements.
