Job Description

The Town of New Salem is seeking a full-time Highway Department Laborer (40 hours per week). This position involves maintaining and repairing town roads and properties under the supervision of the Highway Superintendent. Duties include operating town-owned vehicles and equipment such as dump trucks, backhoes, graders, plows, and spreaders, as well as performing manual labor, using hand tools and power equipment.
Responsibilities:
Maintain and repair dirt and paved roads, drainage systems, and culverts in compliance with state and federal standards. Operate and maintain department vehicles and equipment for road work, snow and ice removal, and other public works activities. Plowing and sanding are mandatory duties during snow and ice events, with required overtime as needed. Perform manual labor including brush removal, debris cleanup, and road maintenance tasks. Use hand tools such as chainsaws, wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Communicate effectively with residents and respond to service needs in a timely manner. Work in coordination with other town departments.
Minimum Requirements:
Valid Massachusetts CDL with airbrake endorsement. Valid 2B Massachusetts Hoisting License and DOT Medical Card, 4G endorsement preferred. High school diploma or equivalent. Knowledge of highway maintenance operations, safety standards, and equipment operation. Ability to perform heavy manual labor (up to 75 lbs) in all weather conditions. Strong communication skills and reliability under time constraints. Mandatory overtime and snow plowing required. Ability to pass randomized drug and alcohol screening.
Pay:
