  • St.
Louis, MO Incumbents in this position operate a tow truck and tow vehicles.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
  • Operates vehicle tow truck.
  • Checks tow truck for proper operation and reports malfunctions.
  • Performs routine vehicle maintenance. Fuels and checks fluid levels and fills if needed. Cleans truck. Changes tow truck tires.
  • Hooks up and tows vehicles that have been abandoned, for parking violations, disabled vehicles from roadways and accident sites, auction vehicles and others as assigned.
  • Completes tow ticket form.
  • Assists with accident site cleanup.
  • Unlocks vehicle doors.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    Data Utilization:
    Requires the ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data and information according to a prescribed scheme or plan.
      Human Interaction:
      Requires the ability to explain, demonstrate and clarify to co-workers and others within well established policies, procedures and standards. Ability to follow specific instructions and respond to simple requests from others.
        Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use:
        Requires the ability to operate and perform complex rapid adjustment on equipment, machinery and tools such as motor vehicles, tow truck and towing equipment, and/or related materials used in performing essential functions.
          Verbal Aptitude:
          Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as regulations, general operating manuals, tow ticket forms, maintenance and work schedules, maps, street guides and repair ticket.
            Mathematical Aptitude:
            Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.
              Functional Reasoning:
              Requires the ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Involves semi-routine standardized work, with some latitude for independent judgment regarding choices of action.
                Situational Reasoning:
                Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity in situations involving a variety of generally pre-defined duties that may be subject to frequent change.
                  Environmental Factors:
                  Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as dirt, dust, pollen, odors, wetness, humidity, rain, fumes, temperature and noise extremes, machinery, vibrations and traffic hazards.
                    Physical Requirements:
                    Requires the ability to lift up to one hundred (100) pounds such as car parts, and push and pull over one hundred (+100) pounds such as tires, bumpers, fenders and others. Requires the ability to stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, balance, twist and climb to attach winch cables to vehicles and operate a tow truck.
                      Sensory Requirements:
                      Requires the ability to recognize and identify degrees of similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and sounds associated with job-related objects, materials and tasks to recognize vehicles, hear engine malfunctions. Qualifications Recent experience in the operation of a tow truck. Qualifying experience must be within the last five years.
                      License:
                      Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B) or CDL permit at the time of filing application and be able to present it upon request. Incumbents must possess and maintain a valid Missouri Commercial Driver's License (Class A or B) while employed by the City of St. Louis. Candidates that have a CDL permit at the time of hire must obtain a valid CDL (Class A or B) as a condition of successfully completing their working test period. Please note type of license, number, class, expiration date, and State where issued on the Employment Application. City Residence Preference Points City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. An additional one (1) point shall be added to the passing score of City residents who receive any other preference on a scale of 100 points. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
