Job Description

The City of West Plains, an Equal Opportunity Employer, is seeking a qualified candidate to serve as a Solid Waste Hauler to join our Utilities Department. This is a full-time, non-exempt position consisting of 40 hours per week. The ideal candidate for the Municipal Solid Waste Hauler position exemplifies the values of teamwork, commitment, learning, integrity, customer service, and initiative. Responsibilities include the safe operation of a sanitation truck and ancillary equipment to haul refuse and materials to designated disposal or management areas, even during inclement weather and weather-related emergencies. The role involves performing pre/post inspections, fueling, and minor maintenance of solid waste vehicles and equipment. The candidate must efficiently and safely carry out tasks while adhering to local, state, and federal regulations. This position requires physically demanding outdoor work, often in extreme weather and travel conditions. Responsibilities include driving and sitting in uncomfortable positions for long periods, with constant exposure to traffic hazards, inclement weather, noise, dust, disagreeable smells, fumes, grease, and unsanitary health hazards. The job necessitates various levels of mental application, including memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, and creative problem solving. Additionally, the role demands the ability to hear, see, communicate, sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, jump, and possess the physical mobility to get in and out of heavy equipment. The position exposes the worker to stressful situations resulting from human behavior, tight deadlines, and time constraints. The employee must also be capable of lifting up to 100 pounds and occasionally working in high or precarious places with exposure to wet or humid conditions, fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. The noise level in the work environment may vary from moderate to loud, and the ability to drive and operate a vehicle daily is required. This position may also involve performing duties as a solid waste collector and/or driver when necessary.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High School diploma, GED or equivalent. Minimum (3) years of experience operating heavy equipment Possess and maintain a valid CDL - Class A with airbrake endorsement throughout employment and meet the requirements of the City of West Plains Operation of Vehicles Policy.
SALARY AND BENEFITS
This position has a salary range of $20.62 to $28.74 per hour, depending on qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefit package is also offered, which includes: Medical, Dental, Basic Life/AD&D and Long-Term Disability coverages offered at zero cost to the employee, with dependent coverage offered at the employee's cost. Missouri Local Government Employee Retirement System (LAGERS) which is fully funded by the City (no cost to employee) with vesting after 5 years. Voluntary participation in Vision, Cafeteria Plan IRS Section 125, Deferred Compensation 457(b) Plans, Flexible Spending Account (FSA) and Supplemental Life, Accident, Critical Illness, Hospital Indemnity, and an Employee Assistance Program (EAP). Generous paid time off (PTO) program in which new employees receive eight hours of PTO per pay period.
