This energetic role offers the opportunity to make a tangible impact on community cleanliness and environmental sustainability. As a relief driver, you will provide essential support across various residential and commercial waste collection routes, ensuring timely and efficient service. Your expertise in commercial truck driving, safety protocols, and customer service will help keep our neighborhoods clean while maintaining compliance with all transportation regulations. Duties Safely operate a variety of waste collection trucks, including front loader, rear loader, and roll-off trucks, adhering to all traffic laws and safety standards. Load and unload refuse containers using mechanical equipment such as rear-end loaders or roll-off mechanisms, ensuring proper handling of waste materials. Conduct thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections of vehicles to verify mechanical condition, including air brake systems and manual transmissions. Follow designated routes accurately, demonstrating strong route driving skills while maintaining efficiency and timeliness. Comply with hazardous materials regulations when handling special waste streams, ensuring safety for yourself and the community. Provide excellent customer service by interacting professionally with residents and business owners during pickups or service inquiries. Maintain detailed logs of daily activities, vehicle inspections, route completion, and any incidents or hazards encountered during shifts. Qualifications Valid Class B Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with air brake endorsement required; experience with manual transmission preferred. Proven experience operating heavy-duty trucks such as garbage trucks, front loaders, rear loaders, or roll-off trucks in municipal waste management or similar environments. Strong knowledge of traffic laws, DOT (Department of Transportation) regulations, state transportation laws, and safety protocols related to commercial truck driving. Mechanical aptitude to perform routine vehicle inspections and basic troubleshooting on heavy equipment. Ability to lift heavy loads repeatedly and perform outdoor work in various weather conditions safely. Excellent driving skills with defensive driving techniques to ensure safety on busy routes. Knowledge of solid waste management practices and hazardous materials regulations is a plus. Outstanding customer service skills with a professional attitude when interacting with the public during collection activities.
