JOB SUMMARY

: Under general supervision, is responsible for driving and operating refuse compaction trucks in pick-up and hauling of refuse; and performs related work as required. May give work guidance to others helping load truck; may occasionally help load refuse into truck.

• Drives and operates refuse compactor in pick-up and hauling of refuse;
• Occasionally gives work guidance to others helping load truck;
• Occasionally helps load refuse into truck;
• Performs mechanical check on truck and performs minor maintenance as required;
• Makes simple notations and reports;
• Performs any functions as assigned by management throughout City as needed;
• Other related duties may be assigned.

• Knowledge of practices used in the safe operation of heavy and light equipment;
• Knowledge of State and City traffic regulations;
• Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions
• Considerable knowledge of practices and precautions to be observed in operating equipment used; some knowledge of minor maintenance practices to be performed on equipment used;
• Skill in the safe operation of equipment used;
• Ability and skill to safely operate a large refuse collection truck on assigned route;
• Ability to operate a variety of heavy and light equipment;
• Ability to understand and follow instructions;
• Ability to establish and maintain an effective working relationship with other employees and the general public.

EDUCATION and/or

EXPERIENCE

• Must have a High School Diploma or GED;
• Must pass a post-offer, pre-employment physical examination, drug test and background check as well be covered under DOT regulations which require pre-employment and random drug screening and breath alcohol testing;
• Some experience in heavy manual labor;
• Must have a good work and attendance record.

LICENSES & CERTIFICATIONS

• Valid driver's license;
• Valid CDL License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee is regularly required to see, talk and hear while performing the physical activities marked below.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing essential functions of this job. Majority of work is performed outdoors where employee will be exposed to extreme weather conditions. The employee may be exposed to fumes, chemicals, hazardous materials and high places. Will also work with sharp tools and hazardous machinery with moving parts, excessive noise, dirt and dust. Work requires the necessity for physical exertion by close daily contact with unpleasant materials. Work involves heavy lifting and exposure to fumes, chemicals, and other noxious odors, machinery with moving parts and moderate to loud noise levels. Employee must wear required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
