About the Role Are you an experienced commercial driver who loves the freedom of the open road and thrives on variety? GFL Environmental is seeking a Traveling Lead Driver to join our team in the Virginia region. In this dynamic role, you will travel site-to-site across Virginia (80% of the time) and occasionally outside the region to support regional operations, step into leadership functions, and operate across all lines of business. As a Traveling Lead Driver, you are a master of the road and a key resource for our operational success—whether leading morning crew-outs, mentoring new drivers, assisting in dispatch, or stepping up behind the wheel of any truck in our fleet.
Key Responsibilities Versatile Fleet Operations:
Safely operate commercial trucks across all lines of business, including:
Commercial Front Load Roll-off Residential Rear Load Residential Automated Side Load Travel & Site Support:
Travel to GFL locations within the Virginia region (80% of the time) and occasionally outside the region as operational needs require.
Operational Leadership & Support:
Assist with daily driver crew-outs, debrief processes, route analysis, scalehouse, and dispatch operations.
Safety & Compliance:
Monitor daily pre/post-trip inspections, conduct weekly vehicle inspections (Safety Lane), ensure adherence to company safety and regulatory standards, and coordinate with shop managers on truck maintenance and repairs.
Training & Mentorship:
Serve as a mentor to existing drivers, conduct new hire training observations, sign-offs, and coaching events.
Customer & Community Service:
Courteously interact with customers and the public along routes, maintaining clean customer sites and representing GFL positively.
Travel & Compensation Details Hourly Rate:
$38.00 - $40.00 per hour
Travel Frequency:
80% travel within the Virginia region; occasional travel outside the Virginia region.
Travel Coverages:
Fully covered lodging and daily per-diem provided when traveling outside your home area. Incidental expenses related to travel covered when traveling. Requirements Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with a clean driving record. Minimum of three (3) years of commercial driving experience. Minimum of one (1) year of commercial driving experience in the solid waste/hauling industry. Experience operating standard transmissions on commercial trucks (depending on location). Ability to drive and operate equipment across all lines of business (Front Load, Roll-off, Rear Load, Automated Side Load). Flexibility to travel frequently across the region and adapt to changing operational needs. Must meet criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to company standards. Knowledge, Skills, & Physical Demands Strong knowledge of commercial truck components, preventive maintenance, and state/federal safety regulations. Excellent communication skills for interacting with dispatch, management, site staff, and customers. Ability to lift, push, pull, or carry up to 50 pounds repetitively and maneuver vehicles in tight or high-traffic areas. Comfort working outdoors up to 100% of the time in varying weather conditions.
