Salary $60,516.00 Annually Location Future vacancies with immediate vacancy in Hilo, HI Job Type Permanent & Temporary Positions Job Number 2026-00096 Department Public Works Division Traffic Opening Date 07/12/2026 Closing Date 7/21/2026 11:59 PM Hawaii Duties Summary Assists a skilled electrician in the performance of work connected with the installation, maintenance, and repair of electrical systems, equipment and appurtenant fixtures; and performs other elated duties as required. There is one (1) immediate permanent full-time vacancy with the Department of Public Works - Traffic Division in Hilo. This Electrician Helper, BC-05 position with the Department of Public Works is a career ladder position. The next level in the series is Electrician, BC-10, $6,309/month. Persons hired into career ladder positions must meet minimum qualifications for the next level in the career ladder series, perform work at the higher level, and meet performance requirements to move to the next level in the career ladder series. The eligible list may be used for other permanent and temporary vacancies as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment. Department of Public Works:
Applicants must be available for stand-by duty and be available for immediate response in cases of emergency (after hours/days off). Examples of Duties Assists in installing and repairing wiring systems and equipment. Assists in repairing and rewinding electrical equipment. Assists in installing and repairing electric motors and appliances. Assists in replacing light fixtures, street lights, outlets, switches, fuses, breakers, and lay controls. Checks traffic lights for correct operation and assists in making repairs if necessary. Assists in the installation of traffic lights. Assists in installing cable and in preparing, tinning, and wiping metals. Prepares lugs, nipples, and taps, and assists in installing racks and lacing cable. Assists in the installation of oil circuit breakers, transformers and other equipment in electrical distribution stations. Makes minor repairs and adjustments to electrical fixtures and motors. Assists in making repairs to electric motors. Cleans tools and equipment. May operate a vehicle to transport materials and employees; may operate a heavy truck with aerial bucket (GVW of 33,000 pounds). Performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualification Requirements Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to: completion of the eighth grade, and one (1) year of experience as an apprentice or helper under a journey electrician or line level, and possession of a valid State of Hawai'i driver's license (Class 3) or any other valid comparable driver's license at time of filing. (You will be required to submit your valid driver's license at time of hire), and for CDL positions, at time of job interview, candidates must possess a good driving record certified by a traffic abstract confirming no DUI convictions, license revocations, or suspensions for three (3) years preceding and no moving violations for one (1) year preceding. A current traffic abstract is valid for 30 days from date of issuance by the district court. (You will be required to submit your current traffic abstract at time of job interview.)

as applicable to the position, possession of a valid State of Hawai'i Commercial Driver License of the appropriate class with the appropriate endorsement(s) prior to completion of probation. (The immediate vacancy with the Department of Public Works requires a valid State of Hawai'i Commercial Driver License Class B prior to completion of probation). as applicable to the position, possession of a current Department of Transportation Medical Examiner's Certificate prior to appointment. Examination:
All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application. Knowledge of:
elementary principles of electricity; common practices, hand tools, materials and equipment used in the electrical trade; occupational hazards, and safety precautions of the trade.
Ability to:
use common electrical tools; do mechanical work connected with the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical systems, and performs manual labor; understand and follow oral and written instructions; handle weights and loads, and work harmoniously with other employees.
