Description Benefits Description General Responsibilities:
Direct traffic in a safe manner so that parent drop-off lanes and bus loop remain clear at all times. Control traffic so that school buses can enter and exit school grounds safely. Essential Duties; (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.) Controls traffic to allow flow of school transportation vehicles, parent and student drivers to and from school; Maintains awareness of present or potential traffic hazards in the area surrounding assigned crossings; Promptly informs building administrator of any hazards and possible corrective measures to be taken; Performs routing work of a repetitive nature requiring some judgment and discretion in dealing with children while acting in accordance with established policies, procedures and guidelines; Employee is expected to exercise considerable caution and safety while supervising the safety of children; Works independently under the general supervision of the Director of Transportation; Arrives promptly at scheduled arrival time (starting time is determined by the Director of Transportation); Reports violations of Va. Code to Sheriff's department; Perform related work as required.Qualifications:
KSA's, Education Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of safety requirements of a traffic guard; Must have completed traffic safety course conducted by Hanover County's Sheriff's Department; Ability to exercise extreme caution while supervising the safety of students and drivers; Ability to exercise judgment and discretion in dealing with the public while following established traffic safety policies, procedures and guidelines; Ability to remain calm, concentrate and perform all responsibilities in a competent manner at all times; Skill in having patience and sensitivity to students and public drivers; Ability to follow oral and written instructions.Education and Experience:
Required:
High School Diploma or equivalent; Minimum of 3 years of driving experience. A comparable amount of training and experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications.Terms of Employment Terms:
Location- Assigned Schools Work Schedule
- 10 Months-182 days
- 4 hours per day Paygrade
- Uniform 6 FLSA Status

Must have the use of sensory skills in order to effectively communicate and interact with other employees and the public through the use of the telephone and personal contact. While performing the duties, the employee is constantly required to move arms and hands; walk, stand, run, talk and listen. Physical agility to stand for one to two hours in various weather conditions. Vision and hearing at or correctable to normal ranges; ability to distinguish colors. Work is regularly performed outdoors under variable weather conditions including extremes of hot and cold temperatures. Exposure to moderate traffic noise and the hazards associated with stopping and/or directing traffic and assisting children to safety. Safety vest must be worn while working. Errors could result in possible injury or loss of life, danger to public safety, confusion, and have possible legal ramifications.
