Job Duties and Preferred Qualifications :
The City of Virginia Beach Public Works Department is currently hiring a Traffic Signs Markings Mechanic II to work in the Traffic Management Operations group.
Duties:
Safely operate equipment such as Stake Body, Thermoplastic Truck, Thermoplastic Long Liner Truck, and Crash Truck. Complete Pre-Check, Post-Check operations, and minor equipment adjustments to In-House Light Equipment. Installation and maintenance of City highway traffic signs. Installation and maintenance of roadway pavement markings and roadway pre-marking to prepare the area for painting. Fabrication of highway traffic signs using specialized equipment and machines. Installation and maintenance of work zone traffic control devices used for emergency detours and provide traffic control support during large Special Events. Assist in maintaining inventory of material supplies. Ability to understand and follow verbal and written instructions, as well as to provide clear instructions to subordinates. Ability to work in extreme heat and cold Ability to complete daily reports and compute material quantities for the job Ensure subordinates comply with applicable safety measures Complete daily logs and work orders in a work management database. Ability to lift and carry weights up to 50 lbs. Direct the work of the field crew in the absence of the maintenance supervisor. Perform other job duties requiring skills, knowledge, and physical requirements as deemed by those duties described or less. Individual assignments will be determined by the supervisor based on the current workloads and department needs.

  • 5:00 pm A pre-employment physical is required. Must possess a Commercial Driver's License

CDL Hiring Bonus:
Newly hired employees with a valid Class A or B CDL will be eligible for a $4,000 hiring bonus paid in three increments during the first year of employment: $1,000 with first paycheck $1,000 first pay period following six-month interim eval (with "meets expectation" performance rating) $2,000 at conclusion of probationary period (with "meets expectation" performance rating) This position is ALPHA 1 and is required to work during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow, etc.).

Minimum Qualifications:
High school or GED plus five (5) years' experience in traffic control or closely related work which utilizes the required knowledge, skills, and abilities, and associated with such positions as sign fabricator, sign installation mechanic, or pavement marking mechanic; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities. Must have a current and valid drivers license.
Special Requirements:
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. This position may require that incumbents to wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, or other safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk. Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee's supervisor based on position assigned. A valid Commercial drivers license (CDL) may be required. This position may be designated as a safety sensitive position and be subject to mandatory drug testing. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination. Successful completion of pre-employment physical.

E VRS Contribution :
All full-time employees are required to contribute 5% of annual salary toward their retirement account; in accordance with VRS retirement provisions. This will be handled through a pre-tax payroll deduction.
