Transportation, Executive Director of Operations Job Goals:
To provide excellent vehicle maintenance services for all Jefferson County School System buses and other vehicles. To assist transportation personnel in the diagnosis, prevention, and correction of transportation problems or unsafe conditions.
Minimum Qualifications:
High school diploma or equivalent. Five (5) years of experience as a school transportation bus/truck mechanic. Maintain a current Department of Transportation (DOT) physical, or Alabama School Bus physical, as required by Board Policy. Possess and maintain a valid Alabama bus driver license (BDL) with P/S endorsement and commercial driver's license (CDL) Class A. Possess and maintain Alabama School Bus Mechanic certification. Ability to meet suitability criteria for employment and/or certification/licensure under the Alabama Child Protection Act of 1999 and Act No. 2002-457. Competent written and verbal communication skills; proficient computer skills. Ability to demonstrate leadership, supervision, and decision-making skills. Ability to operate and maintain needed tools and diagnostic equipment. Ability to diagnose mechanical problems, to implement preventive maintenance programs, and to follow safety and recommended rules for efficient shop operations. Ability to follow safety and recommended rules for efficient shop operations. Physical strength and agility to lift and carry objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Ability to exert up to 75 pounds of force. Ability to furnish a personal set of appropriate mechanic's tools. Ability, agility and stamina to engage in prolonged sitting or standing, stooping, kneeling, crawling, bending, turning and reaching. Ability and willingness to work indoors and outdoors year-round in noisy, crowded environments, and inclement weather. Ability and willingness to work after hours, weekends, or holidays when necessary. Ability to be punctual and in regular attendance. Such alternatives to the above qualifications as listed as the Board may require.
Performance Responsibilities and Essential Functions:
Demonstrates support for the school system and its vision, goals and priorities. Performs maintenance by diagnosing, maintaining, and reconditioning systems for all vehicles and equipment owned by the Jefferson County Board of Education (including, but not limited to, suspension systems, steering systems, differentials, engines, transmissions, exhaust systems, electrical wiring systems, ignition systems, brakes.). Performs preventive maintenance on assigned school buses. Maintains an accurate inventory of supplies and equipment assigned to service truck. Works cooperatively with inspectors and drivers in assigned area. Properly uses and maintains responsibility for tools, equipment, and material resources of the school system. Operates wrecker when necessary. Assists with accident investigations. Requests supplies and equipment needed to carry out duties and assigned projects Performs road call duty as needed. Drives buses and transports students as directed. Responds promptly to call out in emergency situations. Performs all mechanical maintenance services with priority on student and employee safety; removes from service any bus or other vehicle that is unsafe to operate. Returns buses or other vehicles to active service only after identified maintenance problems have been corrected. Engages in work related training to increase knowledge and skills as directed and/or for advancement. Performs duties in a courteous, professional manner. Maintains appropriate confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters. Demonstrates initiative in identifying opportunities for improvement in areas of responsibility. Responds to inquiries, requests, and constructive feedback in a timely and positive manner. Maintains and submits reports, records, and correspondence in a timely and accurate manner. Properly uses and maintains responsibility for tools, equipment, and material resources of the school system. Adheres to school system rules, administrative procedures, local Board policies, and state, federal, and local laws. Reports absences and takes leave in accordance with Board policies and procedures. Performs other job-related duties as assigned by Supervisor(s).
