Job Description

Overview We are seeking an experienced PCB Rework Technician to support our Power Optimization team in San Diego, CA. This is a very part-time, as-needed contract position , averaging approximately 4-5 hours per month . The workload is project-based and may vary depending on engineering needs. This role is ideal for someone looking for supplemental income, such as an independent contractor, retired technician, freelancer, or someone with a flexible schedule. Candidates must be experienced in fine-pitch component rework, trace modifications, BGA rework, and precision soldering, and be able to work independently from engineering markups and schematics. Responsibilities Component-Level Rework Remove and replace 0201 and smaller passive components (resistors, capacitors) under microscope Perform precision soldering and placement of sub-1mm components Operate hot air rework stations and fine-tip precision soldering irons IC Rework Remove and replace BGA packages, including reballing Verify BGA solder joint quality via X-ray or optical inspection (or coordinate with a shop that provides this) Remove and replace leaded ICs — QFP, SOIC, and similar packages — using drag soldering, hot air, or hybrid techniques Prevent thermal damage to adjacent components during IC rework Trace & Wiring Modifications Cut copper traces cleanly without damaging adjacent traces or the substrate Install and route jumper wires to reroute signals per engineering markup or schematic redlines Apply proper wire-tacking technique: secure mechanical and electrical connections, correct wire gauge selection, and strain relief Work from marked-up schematics, layout drawings, or written/verbal engineering instructions Requirements Tools & Equipment Stereo microscope with adequate magnification for 0201-level work Hot air rework station and temperature-controlled soldering iron with fine tips Flux, appropriate solder (leaded/lead-free as specified), and desoldering braid/vacuum ESD-safe workstation and grounding practices Quality & Documentation Ability to perform continuity/connectivity checks after rework Photo documentation of before/after work for QA records Willingness to follow

certification (rework and repair standard), or equivalent hands-on experience Experience with both leaded and lead-free solder processes
