For a complete list of our total compensation package please visit our Total Compensation Package website To view benefits available to all State of Texas employees visit Benefits at a Glance | ERS (texas.gov) Position Description Performs moderately complex transportation operations or maintenance support work such as: maintenance contract and/or material and process inspections; roadway maintenance and repair; light and heavy equipment operation; preventive and minor maintenance on equipment, traffic control; and helping the public during emergency situations. Work requires contact with private entities. Employees at this level perform work independently on assignments; however, all unusual issues are referred to the supervisor.
Essential Duties:
The essential duties for the Transportation Maintenance Tech II include: Serves as the only maintenance contract inspector on a small project. Maintains construction project records and/or bridge inspection records; processes related paperwork; reviews files for compliance with the bridge inspection Manual of Procedures. Inspects routine and non-routine maintenance contract construction methods and workmanship to ensure contractors build and maintain roadways, bridges, traffic signals and related highway structures in accordance with plans and specifications. Assists in providing support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites; assists stranded motorists as required. Inspects barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards. Operates heavy equipment such as a front-end loader one and a half cubic yards or more, tractor-trailer haul truck, large dragline, shovel, paint striper, and dump truck. Operates light equipment such as a front-end loader one and a quarter cubic yards or less, pneumatic roller, rotary broom, spreader box, backhoe, street sweeper, and mower. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Additional duties for Transportation Maintenance Tech III include: Verifies and processes maintenance contract inspection data to build work orders and request payment funding. Operates complex heavy equipment such as a motor grader, large excavator, heavy bulldozer, crane, herbicide truck, heavy asphalt paving machine, self-propelled asphalt distributor, and profiling/milling machine. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned. Additional duties for Transportation Maintenance Tech IV include: Inspects complex maintenance and construction-related work to include hot mix overlay to ensure compliance with safety, laws and regulations, contract specifications and departmental procedures. Serves as project leader responsible for maintenance construction inspection activities for a medium to large maintenance construction project or for several small projects. Performs other job responsibilities as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
Education:
No education required. Experience for Transportation Maintenance Tech (TMT): TMT II = 1 year experience
- TMT III = 2 years experience
- TMT IV = 3 years experience
- Experience must be in transportation engineering support, roadway maintenance, construction inspection, heavy equipment operation, or related work experience.
(Experience can be satisfied by full time or prorated part time equivalent). Related technical training or education from an accredited institution may be substituted for experience on a year per year basis. Substitutions for Minimum Qualifications .
Licenses and Certifications:
Must have a Commercial Class "A" Driver's License at time of application. Must have or obtain an "N" Endorsement within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
Commercial Driver Certificate Competencies:
The required competencies for the Transportation Maintenance Tech II include: Considerable knowledge of Methods, procedures, equipment, and materials used in intermodal transportation engineering construction and maintenance work Applicable inspection methods, procedures and techniques The Texas Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices Some knowledge of Applicable plans, specifications and estimates preparation, review, processing and compliance requirements Proficient skill in Performing calculations to include material and labor estimates, expenses, technical survey data and engineering calculations Using basic mathematical fundamentals Using computers, applicable programs, applications, and systems Operating light and heavy highway equipment Some skill in Communicate effectively Follow verbal and written instructions Additional competencies for Transportation Maintenance Tech III include: Extensive knowledge of Materials used in highway/bridge construction and maintenance Additional competencies for Transportation Maintenance Tech IV include: Proficient skill in Planning, coordinating and handling multiple projects within area of responsibility to meet short and long-term deadlines Analyzing, organizing, and communicating business and technical data Monitoring contracts and procedures Preparing and maintaining confidential and sensitive records, files, and reports
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
