Job Description
Job Summary Join our team as an Afterschool Van Driver and play a vital role in ensuring the safe, reliable, and friendly transportation of students after school hours. In this energetic position, you will operate a passenger van to pick up and drop off children at designated locations, adhering to safety protocols and traffic laws. Your positive attitude and commitment to safety will help create a secure environment for students while providing excellent customer service to families and school staff. This paid position offers an opportunity to make a meaningful difference in the daily lives of children through responsible transportation. Duties Safely operate a passenger van, including school buses or paratransit vehicles, following all traffic laws and transportation safety regulations. Pick up and drop off students at scheduled locations promptly, ensuring timely arrivals and departures. Assist students with boarding and exiting the vehicle, including wheelchair assistance when needed, maintaining their safety and comfort. Follow emergency response procedures for transportation incidents, including first aid or CPR if necessary. Conduct pre-trip inspections of the vehicle to ensure it is in optimal condition, reporting any maintenance issues immediately. Communicate effectively with students, parents, school staff, and dispatchers using clear language and active listening skills. Manage student behavior with professionalism and patience, applying behavior management techniques to ensure a safe environment onboard. Respond quickly to traffic changes or delays by adjusting routes or schedules while maintaining safety standards. Skills Proven experience driving buses or vans, especially in school or transit settings, with knowledge of commercial driving laws and vehicle codes. Valid driver's license with a clean driving record; commercial driver's license (CDL) preferred but not required for all positions. Strong understanding of traffic laws, defensive driving techniques, and emergency response procedures for transportation. Ability to perform heavy lifting when assisting students or handling equipment safely. Excellent communication skills in English; bilingual abilities are a plus for engaging with diverse communities. Knowledge of school policies related to student discipline and behavior management. First aid certification including CPR is highly desirable; willingness to obtain if not already certified. Multilingual skills are advantageous for serving diverse student populations effectively.
