School Van Drivers safely transport special needs students to and from school. Drivers perform pre and post trip vehicle inspections, ensuring their school van is clean and well maintained. School Van Drivers build rapport with both students and parents and resolve emergency and non-emergency situations that occur on the way to and from school.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(Essential Functions) include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Drives school van on scheduled routes in accordance with schedules. Operates all school van equipment and accessories, including two-way radio Oversees the loading and unloading of students, releasing students to authorized individual; assures that safety belts, harnesses and harness straps are securely fastened Conducts established safety and operational inspection of assigned vehicle daily Assures van is in safe and clean operating condition; reporting needed mechanical repairs Maintains a variety of records and reports Attends meetings and in-service training as assigned Performs pre-trip inspections, completing check sheet daily Completes vehicle repair sheet to report equipment defects, including radio defects Maintains accurate route sheet Communicates with all passengers, school officials, parents/guardians, and the general public with the utmost courtesy and respect Maintains cleanliness of the assigned vehicle Performs related work as required.
Education/Experience:
3 years driving experience. Clean driving record Must be able to pass a Massachusetts Criminal Offender Record Information (CORI) check.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Knowledge of or ability to learn van and equipment operation. Knowledge of or ability to learn area and routes of school district Knowledge of first aid practices and procedures Ability to drive a van Ability to read and interpret a map Ability to establish and maintain proper conduct and safety of passengers on school van Ability to exercise good judgment and extreme caution while operating a school van Ability to remain calm in an emergency situation Ability to read and write in English at a level sufficient to successfully perform required duties Ability to understand and carry out both oral and written instructions in an independent manner Ability to recognize mechanical safety hazards in van Ability to learn to operate a two-way radio using required codes Ability to establish and maintain effective work relationships with those contacted in the performance of duties Good communication skills with the general public, co-workers and school personnel Ability to read, interpret, and apply School Bus/Van Safety rules and regulations, safety regulations, and emergency evacuation procedures Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondences, and memos Ability to write simple correspondence
