Paid training provided. About the Role The primary objective of the Paratransit Shuttle Bus Operator is to provide safe, reliable, and efficient transportation service for senior citizens and persons with disabilities throughout Franklin County, Ohio, while ensuring the safety and appropriate assistance of passengers during transportation, loading, and unloading. This position performs safety-sensitive transportation functions and is subject to applicable Capital Transportation, COTA Project Mainstream, U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), and Federal Transit Administration (FTA) requirements. What You'll Do Safely operate shuttle buses according to daily route manifests and all traffic laws and policies Load and unload passengers, operate wheelchair lifts and ramps, and properly secure wheelchairs, scooters, and other mobility devices before the vehicle moves Assist passengers between the vehicle and their origin or destination when required and safe to do so Operate passenger transportation vehicles on highways, city streets, residential streets, and other roadways under varying traffic and weather conditions. Treat every passenger with dignity and respect, and maintain appropriate professional boundaries at all times Protect the confidentiality of passenger information and manifests Put passenger and vehicle safety ahead of schedule while working to stay on time Stay in contact with Dispatch and report delays, no-shows, incidents, injuries, and vehicle issues right away Respond calmly to breakdowns, passenger medical events, and emergencies using established procedures Complete daily pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections and all required paperwork accurately Follow distracted-driving and cell phone policies while operating the vehicle Requirements At least 21 years old and legally authorized to work in the U.S. Valid Ohio driver's license with a driving record acceptable under company standards, plus any endorsement required for the assigned vehicle Pass and maintain a current DOT physical Pass a criminal background check and motor vehicle record check Pass pre-employment drug and alcohol testing and participate in Capital Transportation's DOT/FTA testing program, including random, post-accident, reasonable-suspicion, return-to-duty, and follow-up testing Read, write, and communicate in English well enough to follow manifests, GPS, schedules, and safety instructions Reliable attendance and punctuality is a MUST (essential due to scheduled passenger service) Training Provided New Operators receive paid training over a two-to-three-week period, which includes both classroom and behind-the-wheel (BTW) training. The training focuses on providing safe and reliable transportation and includes topics like passenger assistance, wheelchair lift and ramp operation, mobility-device securement, defensive driving, and emergency procedures. Physical Demands and Work Environment Lift and carry up to 25 pounds Assisting with the loading and unloading of passengers Bend, kneel, crouch, push, and pull as needed to secure occupied and unoccupied mobility devices consistent with established safety procedures Sit for extended periods and move in and out of the vehicle frequently Work in all weather conditions, in traffic, and on uneven, wet, or icy surfaces What Makes You a Great Fit You're patient, calm under pressure, and genuinely care about the people you serve.
