Definition:
This job posting is for a noncompetitive position and will create a new list. The hiring department will conduct a preliminary review of your application to determine who to interview. It is the responsibility of all applicants to provide a complete list of relevant work experience (previous and current) on the application. Resumes will not be accepted in lieu of listed work experience. Under general supervision, is responsible for safely operating a passenger van to transport students with special needs to and from school and special events; performs related duties as required.
Examples of Work:
Any one position may not include all of the duties listed, nor do the examples cover all of the duties that may be performed.
  • Drives a school van on established routes, field trips, extra-pay trips, and athletic routes picking up and discharging students at designated locations;
  • Assists students with special needs to ensure their safe transport;
  • Conducts emergency evacuation drills to prepare students in proper safety evacuation procedures;
  • Maintains student discipline and reports all incidents/violations to management;
  • Consults with principal or designee and parents when behavior problems arise that cannot be resolved on the van;
  • Maintains cleanliness and orderliness of school van;
  • Performs pre-trip and post-trip inspection and completes appropriate documentation;
  • Reports all mechanical defects in writing to maintenance personnel to schedule repair;
  • Develops and maintains accurate route rosters for substitutes and office use;
  • Completes annual in-service trainings as approved by the School District Transportation Department;
  • May perform minor general maintenance work when vans are not in normal daily operation.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Two (2) years of experience as a licensed driver.
  • Possession of a valid driver's license.
  • Must be at least twenty-one (21) years of age at the time of hire.
  • Possession of a valid certificate of completion of the Pre-Service Driver Training issued by the Ohio Department of Education for school van drivers required upon completion of the probationary period.
Substitution:
A valid certificate of completion of the Pre-Service Driver Training issued by the Ohio Department of Education for school bus drivers may be accepted in lieu of the van certificate.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Thorough knowledge of the Ohio Motor Vehicle Laws; thorough knowledge of Ohio Pupil Transportation Operation and Safety Rules and Procedures; ability to safely operate a passenger van; ability to enforce pupil safety procedures; ability to interact successfully with pre-school, elementary, middle, high school, and students with special needs; ability to physically lift preschool and special needs children as necessary; ability to interact successfully with principals and teachers; ability to communicate effectively; ability to cope with stressful situations; ability to read and understand written information; ability to recognize van malfunction; ability to read and understand a map; ability to perform minor maintenance when needed; ability to modify time schedule by addition or subtraction of times; ability to maintain written records.
