Job Description
Overview The Vineyard Field Hand II plays a key supporting leadership role in the daily and seasonal operations of our eight-acre estate vineyard, working closely with the Vineyard Manager and ownership team. This position is ideal for someone with prior vineyard experience who is ready to take on greater responsibility, work more independently in the field, and help ensure the health, productivity, and presentation of our estate vines. Gioia dell'Amore Cellars is a boutique estate winery located in western Rockingham County, North Carolina, in the town of Mayodan. Our property includes eight acres of vines planted across eight varietals, a tasting room, event spaces, and on-site rental cabins. We are a hands-on, hospitality-driven estate where vineyard excellence and guest experience go hand in hand. Duties and Responsibilities Vineyard Operations and Crop Care The Field Hand II will perform and support advanced vineyard tasks including, but not limited to: Execute seasonal vineyard work with increased independence, including pruning, shoot thinning, suckering, canopy management, hedging, and crop balancing Maintain vineyard cleanliness by ensuring removal of pruning, debris, and organic material following field operations Monitor vine development and proactively identify and report pest, disease, irrigation, or nutrient concerns to the Vineyard Manager Assist in implementing pest management strategies, including netting, deterrents, and other vineyard protection systems Support harvest preparation and actively participate in harvest operations including fruit evaluation, picking coordination, and field organization Assist in tracking vine performance and seasonal changes to support vineyard records and decision-making Equipment Operation and Field Leadership
- Operate vineyard and grounds equipment safely and efficiently, including:
- Utility vehicles (Gator) for transport of materials and supplies
- Vineyard maintenance equipment such as weed eaters, blowers, chainsaws, and similar tools
- Additional farm and estate equipment as needed
- Demonstrate proper care, inspection, and basic maintenance of tools and machinery
- Provide guidance or informal support to less experienced field staff when working as part of a team
- Maintain safe working practices and ensure equipment is used in accordance with training and standards Vineyard Compliance and Communication
- Follow all vineyard safety protocols and pesticide application restrictions as directed by the Vineyard Manager
- Properly use and comply with all required PPE and safety procedures
- Communicate observed vine health changes and seasonal vineyard events from bud break through harvest
- Support adherence to all vineyard best practices, regulatory compliance, and estate standards Estate and Grounds Presentation
- Contribute to maintaining a clean, well-kept, and guest-ready estate environment
- Assist in vineyard-adjacent grounds care surrounding the tasting room, pavilion, cabins, and event spaces
- Ensure vineyard appearance consistently reflects the standards of a premium estate winery Position Requirements
- Prior vineyard or agricultural field experience required (Field Hand I or equivalent experience preferred minimum foundation)
- English literacy required; Spanish fluency strongly preferred
- Demonstrated experience with farm or vineyard equipment preferred
- Ability to work independently with strong judgment and problem-solving ability
- Comfortable working in varying weather conditions and uneven/sloped terrain
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs
- Familiarity with PPE use and agricultural safety standards
- Strong communication skills and ability to follow and execute directives accurately
- Flexible availability including occasional weekends or extended seasonal hours
- Viticulture, horticulture, or related agricultural certification preferred but not required Position Type Part-time to full-time opportunity with potential for growth into expanded vineyard responsibilities within a collaborative, estate-driven winery environment.
