Job Description

Summary of Functions Assists in the operation and maintenance of the Tribe's community water, wastewater, and solid waste systems. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Assists in the operation and maintenance of the Tribe's community water, wastewater, and solid waste systems. Immediately informs up line supervision and/or management of any potential, imminent, or occurring system(s) violations of applicable regulations. Assists in taking immediate and effective action to prevent a violation, if possible, if not, then assists in taking action to minimize or mitigate violation. Works closely with the Systems Supervisor, Public works Director, Indian Health Service and others to improve Tribal systems. Assists in the collection, recording and management of systems' data. Assists with the operations, maintenance, and cleanliness of the tribe's solid waste facilities. Assists in assembling annual reports of average and total daily, monthly, and annual demand. Assists in maintaining systems' grounds and facilities in a clean, well kept, and orderly manner. Assists in daily inspection of all water and wastewater facilities and components including but not limited to water booster station, water storage tanks, wastewater lift stations, wastewater treatment facilities, and reclaimed water land application system. Assists in troubleshooting and immediate repair of systems' components. Assists vendors in exposing and pumping of individual septic tanks. Assists in providing semi-annual maintenance of individual wastewater disposal systems. Assists keeping system vaults and boxes free of debris and infiltration water. Ensures that Tribal elders and low-income households are assisted with home maintenance and minor housing (utility) related emergencies. Assists with maintaining access to individual and community water meters, valves and fire hydrants. Assists with unplugging toilets and building sewers for tribal facilities and tribal residences. Assists with snowplow duties at water, wastewater, and solid waste facilities, Tribal facilities and Tribal roads. Additional duties as assigned. Supervisory Responsibilities None Education High school diploma or equivalent is required. Experience A minimum of five years' experience working with the maintenance of community water, wastewater, and solid waste systems or similar maintenance of facilities or building systems. Skills & Abilities Ability to troubleshoot, repair, and/or effect repairs of mechanical systems including but not limited to replacement of pumps, pipe, pipe fittings, meter boxes, vaults, valves, pressure reducing valves, and similar items. Ability to initiate and implement tasks and to work independently with little supervision. Ability to read, understand and work from plans, drawings, blueprints, specifications, building codes and similar directions. Work with various types and sizes of pipe including but not limited to PVC, ABS, iron, and PE. Ability to use and operate of a wide range of hand and power tools including generators, gas powered pumps, weed eaters, chain saws, ATVs, pressure washers, electric saws, hammers, drills, sanders, squares, levels, transits, etc. Ability to safely operate pick-up trucks and similar vehicles. Proficient in word processing, data management, electronic procurement, and internet communications. Other Requirements Ability to obtain and maintain Work Permit Level 1. Valid Motor vehicle operator's license and insurance, and insurability under the Tribal vehicle insurance program. Water and/or Wastewater Level I Certificate must be obtained within 18 months of employment. Ability to work nights, weekends, and holidays when required by business needs Ability to maintain consistent, regular attendance Valid driver's license and insurability if operating a Tribal vehicle Physical Demands The physical demands described below are representative of those required to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made in accordance with applicable law. This position requires the ability to bend, stoop, lift, carry, and move items weighting up to 80 pounds. Portions of job require extended periods of heavy lifting and overhead work and the wearing of protective clothing and gear. Work is performed both in-doors and out of doors under varied (hot, cold, wet, dry) weather conditions. This position requires significant amounts of standing or walking. This position requires occasional local travel. Additional travel may be required to attend out of area training. This position requires the ability to safely operate a motor vehicle.
