Job Title:
Wastewater / Quality Technician Job Description The Wastewater / Quality Technician supports process control and quality assurance for steel coil production by performing wastewater treatment, laboratory testing, and detailed quality inspections. This role works in a hands-on industrial environment, preparing and monitoring chemical baths, testing and documenting coil quality, and ensuring wastewater remains within permitted pH limits. The technician collaborates closely with production teams to identify and resolve quality issues on the line while maintaining accurate records and compliance with internal and external specifications. Responsibilities Perform wastewater treatment activities, including testing and adjusting water to remain within permitted pH limits for compliance. Load and unload filters and monitor wastewater systems to support safe and efficient operations. Prepare, maintain, and adjust chemical baths for steel coils, including titrations of the baths and correcting them when they are out of specification. Conduct a wide range of laboratory tests such as titrations, EXRF testing, ICP analysis, pH measurements, and other physical tests as required. Inspect steel coils visually and dimensionally, including checking coating thickness (e.g., electric galvanized thickness) and performing pole tests and other customer-specific tests. Process and document coil quality data, including recording measurements, test results, and observations in spreadsheets and other documentation systems. Check valves, pumps, and related equipment, and communicate any issues or adjustments needed to production personnel. Observe coils as they run on the line and promptly identify and call out defects such as tears, stains, holes, dents, and other surface issues. Help control the production line by providing real-time quality feedback and working with production to locate and address quality issues on coils. Perform blister testing on coils, record results, and communicate findings to the appropriate mill representatives. Follow established quality control and quality assurance procedures to meet internal standards and customer specifications. Work safely around chemicals, paints, coatings, and metals, following all safety guidelines and using proper handling techniques. Complete all required documentation accurately and on time, ensuring traceability of tests, adjustments, and quality decisions. Support other assigned duties in the lab and production area as needed to maintain smooth operations. Essential Skills Previous laboratory experience gained through college coursework or work experience. Understanding of the pH scale and the ability to apply basic pH concepts in testing and adjustments. Experience working around chemicals, paints, coatings, or metals in an industrial, laboratory, or similar setting. Ability to perform titrations and interpret results to make appropriate adjustments to chemical baths. Competence in performing pH measurements and recording accurate data. Mechanical aptitude to work with pumps, valves, and related equipment in a production environment. Ability to conduct visual inspections and identify defects such as tears, stains, holes, dents, and other surface irregularities on coils. Basic quality control and quality assurance skills, including following procedures and documenting results. High School Diploma or GED. Comfort working in a role that requires learning multiple tasks, including lab work, wastewater testing, and quality inspections. Ability to communicate clearly with production staff and other team members regarding quality findings and process issues. Willingness to work with corrosive and other industrial chemicals using proper safety practices. Additional Skills & Qualifications Experience in wastewater treatment, water treatment, or water and wastewater operations. Work with pumping stations, pumps, and valves in an industrial or utility setting. Experience as a Waste Water Technician, Quality Technician, or in a similar quality control or inspection role. Familiarity with quality control, quality assurance, and quality inspection processes in a manufacturing environment. Experience with restoration or treatment processes involving chemicals and coatings. Ability to work effectively in a production environment and coordinate with production teams. Comfort using spreadsheets or basic computer tools to document and track test results. Openness to working second or third shift based on performance and operational needs. Ability to work overtime, including extended shifts and some Saturdays, as needed. Work Environment This position operates in an industrial steel processing facility that performs processing, coating, and slitting of steel coils for various end customers. The role is non-union within a broader union environment. Work is hands-on and involves regular exposure to chemicals, paints, coatings, metals, pumps, valves, and wastewater treatment systems. The technician spends time both in a laboratory setting and on the production floor, observing coils on the line and interacting closely with production teams. Multiple shifts are used, and candidates should be open to working all shifts. Typical schedules may include day shift (7:00am-3:00pm), a likely assignment of 11:00am-7:00pm, second shift (3:00pm-11:00pm), and third shift (11:00pm-7:00am). Employees generally work five days per week, with shifts that can extend to 10 or sometimes 12 hours, and Saturday work is rotated. Overtime is paid at time-and-a-half after 8 hours in a day and for all hours worked on Saturday, and at double time after 12 hours in a day. The environment emphasizes safety, proper chemical handling, and adherence to quality standards. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Walbridge, OH. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $24.00 - $24.00/hr.
