SALARY RANGE
$ 19.02 - $23.12 Per Hour; up to (20) work hours per week (varies per season)
POSITION
This part-time position serves as a Water Safety Instructor I in the Department of Recreation and Community Services and performs a variety of duties including, but not limited to swim lesson instruction, and lifesaving skills. Examples of Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Under the direction of the Aquatics Supervisor and the Aquatics Coordinator, the Water Safety Instructor I is required to perform the following essential job functions: Teach, communicate and demonstrate all the essential swim strokes and skills to participants in and around the pool; Maintain the pool area, deck, chemicals, building, and equipment at the pool for cleanliness, safety and usage; Maintain the ability to create and follow lesson plans; Provide excellent customer service, assist with reception duties, and diffuse patron concerns as they arise; Think independently and problem solve with minimal supervision; Complete, verify, retrieve and process all required paperwork including attendance, American Red Cross, and registration forms as well as be responsible for collecting and processing fees; Ability to handle all emergency situations effectively and administer first aid, CPR, AED, and rescues as necessary; Enforce pool policies and regulations and convey and community program objectives and facility services with pool patrons, City staff, and the general public; Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, while being able to evaluate the progress of swim students; Attends all necessary meetings and trainings; Able to alter work availability to work an ever-changing schedule including evenings, weekends and holidays; Perform other duties as assigned by Aquatics Supervisor and/or Aquatics Coordinator. Typical Qualifications
DESIRABLE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of methods, materials, and equipment involved in the maintenance and operation of swimming pools; Previous experience in swim lesson instruction, including beginning through advanced swim strokes; Enjoyment of working with people of all ages and ability to be flexible, energetic, outgoing, creative; Strong communication skills to maintain a safe, cooperative and friendly working relationship with employees, user groups, pool patrons, and the general public.
EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
Prior experience in aquatics or swimming preferred. Currently attending or graduated from high school. College course work with a major in recreation, child development, or physical education preferred. Ability to pass an in-water demonstration of aquatic skills.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
This position is open to all candidates who meet the following minimum qualifications: Must have access to reliable transportation to and from work; Experience in aquatics, recreation, and/or other related areas is desirable. Supplemental Information

Part-time employees are employed "at will" and serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority. As such, their services can be discontinued without cause. May be double classified as a Recreation Leader to work various Recreation programs and events year round.
