10 mONTHS GENERALDESCRIPTION
The School Security Officer maintains a safe and orderly environment in all areas of the school, including the school building, parking lot(s) and grounds, for the security and welfare of all students, faculty, staff, and visitors in the assigned school. The School Security Officer supports teaching and learning by assisting the school administrative team with enforcing policies and procedures, monitoring personnel and/or visitors, and communicating information in response to inquiries or school security incidents.MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
1. High School Diploma or equivalent, required 2. Experience working with youth and/or adults in an organized setting with school safety, law enforcement, or security work, preferred 3. General knowledge of practices concerning the protection of school buildings and grounds 4. Ability to recognize and identify activities or situations, which have or may become a problem or emergency requiring immediate attention; ability to think and act quickly, effectively and responsibly under emergency situations 5. Ability to follow written and oral instructions 6. Excellent communication and computer skills 7. Attitude and competence necessary for assigned responsibilities 8. Ability to make independent decisions in accordance with established policies and procedures 9. Satisfactory completion of all onboarding requirements prior to first day of employment, including, but not limited to:- Documentation of eligibility for employment in the U.S.
- Virginia State Police/FBI criminal history background check
- Virginia Department of Social Services background check
- Tuberculosis test/screening completed within the last 12 months
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
(These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. Monitors guests as they enter or leave the building and investigates any unauthorized visitors. 2. Checks the passes of all students in the halls. 3. Performs restroom security checks. 4. Reports violations of student conduct policy and other incidents to administrative personnel. 5. Checks and secures all exterior doors. 6. Monitors the common areas, cafeteria, and main halls during lunches and directs students back to classrooms from lunch. 7. Reports any student displaying aggressive actions to administrative personnel. 8. Maintains crowd control when needed. 9. Maintains high visibility at all times. 10. Assists with supervision of students assigned to In-School Suspension. 11. Assists with monitoring of security cameras. 12. Refers students found in unauthorized areas to administrative personnel. 13. Assists with monitoring students assigned to after-school detention. 14. Monitors interior and exterior of school campus. 15. Maintains the orderly flow of foot traffic in the school hallways. 16. Maintains the orderly flow of automobile traffic in the parking lot(s). 17. Communicates safety and security policies and enforcement procedures to students, staff, and visitors to ensure their understanding of such information and the potential consequences of violation. 18. Assists with conducing and monitoring fire and safety drills, school lockdowns and other emergency situations in accordance with established policies and procedures. 19. Participates in staff development and staff meetings as requested. 20. Prepares oral and written reports and/or referrals to document activities, provide written reference, and/or convey information. 21. Assists school administrators and law enforcement officials in handing serious student offenses and law violations. 22. Testifies in court and at discipline hearings as required. 23. Acts in a courteous and respectful manner, using good judgment and appropriate communication skills at all times. 24. Maintains a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality regarding students, parents, and other staff members. 25. Models non-discriminatory behavior in all activities. 26. Performs related work as required.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Knowledge of counseling theories and skills, group dynamics, and small group processes; extensive knowledge of K-12 child and multi-cultural development; demonstrates working knowledge of the ASCA Model; knowledge of K-12 instructional programs; knowledge of Virginia Standards of Learning; working knowledge of the juvenile justice system and laws that apply to juveniles; thorough knowledge of local, state and federal standards; demonstrates considerable knowledge of FERPA, IDEA, McKinney-Vento Act, ESL and laws concerning student rights and confidentiality, as well as, other state and federal mandates; working knowledge of student database systems; thorough knowledge of standardized testing and procedures and interpretation of scores; working knowledge of gifted and special education programs; knowledge of promotion and retention requirements; excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills; ability to work with administrators, colleagues, central office and school based staff, students, parents and community.PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Average amount of climbing, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, and other repetitive motions.
