Job Description

We are seeking a part-time team member to join us at our downtown Wailuku location, working approximately 24 hours per week . This is not a remote position and must be on-site. PRIMARY FUNCTION
Serves as primary medical Billing Specialist, responsible for activities related to billing, third party, and patient follow-up and customer service, ensuring optimal billing and follow-up standards are maintained.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND FUNCTIONS
Responsible for all patient phone calls and in-person/clinic interactions related to billing. Conduct research, resolve and communicate patient billing discrepancies and adjustments. Work with Community Engagement to communicate updated insurance demographics and sliding fee documentation and as well as assist front desk staff to help ensure patient demographic, insurance, sliding fee and proof of income (POI) is accurately entered/updated in the system. Prepare daily cash log, post payments, and work with front desk and accounting staff on any discrepancies. Maintain and complete assigned work queue tasks in EPIC. Work closely with providers and other clinical staff to ensure accuracy of billing. Maintain smooth workflow. Communicate as needed with insurance plans on billing issues. Communicate information regarding patient billing activities and issues to the Finance Team. Demonstrate ability to be viewed as a subject matter expert in their current role. Organize work/resources to accomplish objectives and meet deadlines. Demonstrate personal responsibility for job performance. Maintain relationships with health plans, healthcare providers, other professionals, coworkers and patients. Participate in quality improvement activities. Demonstrate a cooperative team approach in activities. Attends and participates in meetings, committees, and training sessions as directed Other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
High School diploma or GED. Business school or equivalent preferred.
Experience:
Minimum one year experience in a medical/hospital setting and familiarity with medical terminology preferred and/or Medical Office Assistant. Preferred medical billing office experience.
Skills:
Computer skills required. Knowledge of Microsoft Word and Excel required. Knowledge of use of adding machine, copier, fax machine, etc. Familiarity with Hawaii insurance, including managed care plans.
Communication Demands:
Frequent conversing with the public, patients, physicians, community agencies, and professionals. Talking on the telephone, training/giving instructions, receiving instructions, and composing written language (English). Ability to work with diverse elements of the Maui community and target groups, including the mentally ill, alcohol and substance abusers, homeless, and non-English speaking individuals.
