The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with Athena EMR/Athenahealth , medical billing, coding, claim follow-up, denial management, and insurance requirements. Experience in colorectal surgery, gastroenterology, or another surgical specialty is preferred but not required . We are looking for someone who understands the complete revenue cycle and can independently identify and resolve billing and coding issues while maintaining accuracy, compliance, and timely reimbursement. Responsibilities Prepare and submit healthcare claims using billing software, EMR (Electronic Medical Records), and EHR (Electronic Health Records) systems to insurance companies and patients. Review medical records and documentation to ensure accuracy in coding, including DRG (Diagnosis-Related Group), CPT (Current Procedural Terminology), ICD-9, ICD-10, and ICD coding standards. Verify patient insurance coverage and benefits, addressing any discrepancies or issues related to health insurance policies. Follow up on unpaid or denied claims through medical collections processes to maximize reimbursement. Maintain detailed records of billing activities, medical records, and claim status updates while ensuring compliance with healthcare regulations. Collaborate with healthcare providers to clarify documentation and coding requirements for accurate billing. Provide excellent customer service by addressing patient inquiries related to billing statements and payment options. Qualifications Proven experience in medical billing, coding, or healthcare claims management with a solid understanding of medical terminology and medical records. Familiarity with
DRG, CPT
coding, ICD-9, ICD-10, and ICD coding systems used in healthcare billing processes. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications such as Word and Excel, along with experience using billing software and EMR/EHR systems. Knowledge of health insurance policies, healthcare claims management, and medical collection procedures. Strong attention to detail with the ability to review complex medical documentation accurately. Excellent communication skills combined with a customer service-oriented approach. Prior experience working within a medical office environment is preferred.
