OBJECTIVE
Under the direction of the Chief Curator, this position performs moderately complex curatorial duties to enhance and maintain intellectual control over 42 state historic site collections managed by the Texas Historical Commission (THC). Collections are stored at the Curatorial Facility for Artifact Research (CFAR) in Austin, THC¿s main repository for the preservation of held-in-trust archival and infrastructure records, archeological, architectural, decorative and fine arts collections. In addition to the Chief Curator, this position will work closely with the Archeological Collections Manager, CFAR Lab Manager, Curatorial Field Manager, and Regional Collections Managers on projects, research, and issues involving documentation of collections.
This position maintains documentation related to the life cycle of state-owned cultural resource collections from their acquisition and accessioning to deaccessioning, documentation, display, inventory, loan tracking, and care. THC collections represent a broad range of Texas history and are generated in several ways from bequests and purchase, to state-mandated transfers. Essential skills for this position include experience with museum registration methods, condition reporting, acquisition documentation, cataloguing, exhibition and loan management, and deaccession and inventory. The ideal candidate will be comfortable with employing digital practices, while also maintaining manual systems and physical documentation. Extensive experience with database and/or collections management applications is critical. Experience with climate monitoring software and pest management is preferred.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
The Registrar is responsible for creating and maintaining catalog records, reporting on object movement and condition, conducting and supporting regular and periodic inventories, and supporting all registration related activities of the Historic Sites Division and Archeology Division permanent and education collections at CFAR. Maintaining comprehensive digital and physical files for every object, including accession numbers, condition, location, and history. Enhancing object and administrative records in both the collections management database and physical object files. This maintenance can include, but is not limited to, updating object photography, attaching object research and publication notes, verifying current object location information, classifying objects through the appropriate use of controlled vocabularies, and managing collection loan and transport information.
Processing new acquisitions, including accessioning and cataloguing, ensuring these acquisitions adhere to agency policies and legal requirements related to collections, including copyright.
Processing deaccessions, including condition reporting, justification, facilitating commission approvals, and assisting with final disposition.
Assisting with the identification of conservation priorities
•documenting changes or damage to the collection and maintaining a list of objects requiring conservation. Ensuring security of collections; monitoring and recording environmental conditions of objects with system software.
Managing and evaluating collections exhibit and storage conditions for locations that THC collections are displayed or stored and developing a plan for their improvement. Overseeing inventory control, including periodic audits of the collection.
Assisting in generating reports related to collections and exhibitions for meetings, reports, and presentation, as well as in response to both internal and external inquiries.
Assisting in the management of object storage areas; collaborating with CFAR staff and Archeology and Historic Site Division staff.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Arts in Art History, Anthropology or Museum Studies or a related field is preferred with a minimum of (2) years of registration/collections management experience in a museum setting. Proficiency and knowledge of professional museum policies and procedures and museum registration practices and principles. Proficiency with Collections Management Software systems including

Discovery, Access, Past Perfect and Excel.
The ability to maintain the security or integrity of the critical infrastructure;Valid driver¿s license, acceptable driving record and ability to drive a state vehicle; and Required to travel up to 20% of the work period.
PREFER:
Experience with cataloging historic furnishing, archival, and/or decorative art collections.
Experience in archeology or related discipline.
Experience in cataloging or inventorying geographically dispersed collections.
