Job Description

The Eligibility Technician serves as a vital resource for residents and their families by facilitating access to Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and other long-term care benefits. This position works collaboratively with the Business Office and Social Services departments to ensure timely eligibility determinations, ongoing benefit management, and resident support. The Eligibility Technician acts as a liaison between residents, families, facility staff, government agencies, and community resources while maintaining accurate records and providing education regarding financial and eligibility requirements. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesBenefits Eligibility and Application Support Determine resident eligibility and assist with applications for Long-Term Care Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and other applicable assistance programs. Guide residents and families through benefit application, renewal, and recertification processes. Educate residents and responsible parties regarding eligibility requirements, income limits, asset guidelines, and financial obligations related to benefit programs. Maintain current knowledge of Alaska Long-Term Care Medicaid regulations and eligibility requirements and adapt processes to regulatory changes. Documentation and Case Management Develop, implement, and maintain systems to track Medicaid eligibility status, application progress, renewals, and related resident financial information. Obtain, organize, and maintain documentation necessary for eligibility determinations, including: Bank statements Medicaid cards Social Security records Asset and account information Release of Information forms Other supporting documentation as required Maintain accurate and confidential resident records in accordance with privacy and regulatory standards. Resident and Family Support Communicate effectively with residents, families, staff, and external agencies regarding insurance coverage, eligibility status, and time-sensitive requests. Assist residents with visits and appointments at financial institutions, Social Security offices, Medicaid offices, and other agencies as necessary to complete eligibility requirements. Provide education and guidance regarding financial resources, benefit options, personal asset management, and Medicaid-related responsibilities. Financial Coordination Communicate resident financial responsibilities, including private pay balances and resident liability amounts based on Medicaid cost-of-care determinations. Assist with collection efforts related to resident financial obligations and benefit-related balances. Collaborate with facility leadership to ensure timely resolution of billing and eligibility issues impacting resident accounts. Interdisciplinary Collaboration Work closely with the Business Office Manager and Social Services Manager to meet the needs of residents within Polaris Extended Care and Polaris Transitional Care. Assist Social Services in coordinating and scheduling resident care conferences and related meetings. Establish and maintain positive working relationships with residents, families, staff members, government representatives, and community partners. Perform additional duties and special projects as assigned in support of the Business Office and Social Services departments. QualificationsEducation and Experience High school diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree in business, healthcare administration, social services, human services, or a related field preferred. Experience working with Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security benefits, healthcare billing, long-term care, social services, case management, or financial eligibility programs preferred. Experience in a skilled nursing or long-term care setting preferred. Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of or ability to learn Alaska Long-Term Care Medicaid regulations and eligibility processes. Strong organizational and time-management skills. Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong customer service, interpersonal, and problem-solving abilities. Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information with discretion and professionalism. Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and electronic record systems. Ability to work independently while maintaining effective collaboration with interdisciplinary teams. Self-motivated individual with a strong work ethic and goal-oriented mindset. Physical Requirements Ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, and reach throughout the workday. Ability to transport files and records as needed. Ability to accompany residents to appointments and community agencies when necessary. Ability to use standard office equipment, including computers, telephones, and printers.
