BASIC POSITION FUNCTION
Under supervision, to perform a variety of health services duties designed to free the school nurse from routine work related to the health services program and to perform routine, general clerical work and other related duties as required.
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
This position is established primarily to relieve the school nurse of certain necessary health services, tasks and routine details. The position may perform specialized health care services to students with exceptional needs which may require additional training under the direction of the school nurse. The position also requires the individual to work with and learn the terminology, processes and equipment of an office. As the position involves typing, office skills should be those of an entry level Clerk Typist.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES
Administering to students with minor injuries and illnesses and providing health care to students under the direction of the school nurse; performing the specialized physical health care services as assigned which are prescribed by the student's licensed physician; Assisting with individual health records by recording and filing information; Assisting with immunization and physical examination records by recording and filing information, sending follow-up notices to parents and maintaining lists of students who have incomplete records; Assisting with technical aspects of vision and hearing screening by setting up equipment, arranging for space, arranging for students to come to the testing areas, recording results, and making lists of students for follow-up with parents; Maintaining the health office by cleaning the sink areas and equipment, keeping supplies replenished, preparing first-aid kits, keeping necessary linens clean, keeping the log of students coming to health office; Assisting with dispensing of medication when prescribed by physician, and making routine calls to parents to notify them regarding illness or minor injury cases; Assisting the school nurse with special education assessments by obtaining preliminary information and typing health and developmental summaries, setting up equipment for a variety of assessments; assisting the school nurse with general assessments by recording information; Assisting the school nurse with collecting and preparing some of the materials used for classroom health education presentations and acquiring necessary equipment; Receiving the public and providing routine, factual information; Maintaining simple operational records by transferring data, calculating totals and subtotals, or compiling summaries; Receiving money payments from time to time, issuing receipts and turning in money, inserting and extracting materials established numerical or alphabetical files and preparing new file folders in accordance with specific instructions; Typing record cards, lists, and memos and letters from clear copy or complete rough draft; operating standard office equipment such as a computer terminal.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of:
The operation of standard office equipment including a computer terminal; Typing, filing and telephone communication; The elements of English, spelling, grammar and arithmetic.
Ability to:
Understand the general needs and behavior of students and recognize the need to provide for the personal privacy and dignity of all students; Administer first aid and CPR and specialized physical health care; Handle emergency situations by remaining calm and taking appropriate action; Perform routine clerical work and learn office operations, procedures and equipment including the computer; Spell correctly, use good English and make simple arithmetical computation; Understand and carry out oral and written directions; Type at a rate of 40 words per minute from clear copy.
