The purpose of the student internship/temporary position is to provide opportunities for college students to gain experience in the field of Biology, Water Resources, Environmental Science or Environmental Engineering. Interns will participate in tasks focused on water quality, lake management, water conservation, educational and volunteer outreach programs and assist with various water resource related programs.

The Water Resource Student Intern will assist with a variety of programs and projects related to water quality, water quantity and community engagement. Individual must be available for all scheduled restoration events and community engagement activities plus event preparation as necessary. Lake restoration events include the identification and removal of invasive plants, native vegetation planting design, and habitat enhancement. Will also be required to manage and lead Seminole, Education, Restoration and Volunteer (SERV) Program volunteers during restoration events. This may require weekend hours. Assists in conducting general lake assessments, native and exotic/nuisance vegetation identification, and habitat assessments associated with Lake Management Program (LMP) and Municipal Service Benefit Unit (MSBU) lakes. Provides summary of observations to Senior Scientist.
Assists the Water Policy Program in water conservation related activities such as analyzing water consumption data, data entry and quantification of current water conservation programs. Work on public education and outreach plans that focus on the County's Holistic Water Policy Plan. Individuals should be comfortable with attending and preparing for community engagement events, speaking to the public on topics related to water resources in the Central Florida region. Events could include, SERV Program events, Lake Watch Programs, Storm Drain Marking, Adopt- A-River Program, Garden Expo, etc. This may require night and weekend hours. Investigation of project sites and incidents (such as fish kills, vegetation issues, and water quality concerns). Use of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) to create related maps and databases for program staff support such as presentations, documents, and housing scientific data for various projects. Assists with water quality and biological sampling. Responsible for cleaning boats and trucks, along with organizing the warehouse. Must be willing to get wet, dirty, muddy, and to work in all weather conditions. Must be able to lift and carry tools, equipment, and materials (over 30 lbs), for events. Must be comfortable speaking in front of groups. Must have experience in Microsoft Office software such as Excel, PowerPoint, Word and other various software for program staff support. Supports strategic plan for Watershed Management and Water Policy Divisions. Performs other duties as assigned or as may be necessary.

In the event of an emergency, all employees are considered essential personnel and may be required to perform alternate duties. Must be currently enrolled, with at least two (2) years completed, in a higher education organization (university, college, or technical institute). A comparable amount of education, training, or experience may be substituted for the minimum qualifications. Must possess and maintain a valid Florida Driver's License. Must be able to compose effective and accurate correspondence. Must possess the ability to effectively interact with internal and external customers and at all levels of the organization. Must be skilled in written and verbal communication Must be proficient with personal computer and general office equipment such as fax, copier, and printers. All employees must attend Seminole County Required Trainings. Department Specific trainings per position may be required.
