To ensure herd health, a dairy herdsman typically performs the following tasks: Monitors the health of all animals on the premises and notes any behavioral changes Treats injuries or illnesses as they occur Monitors hoof health Gives vaccinations and other injections Manages reproductive management program Assists with calving Maintains comprehensive health and production records in DairyComp305 Works closely with the veterinarian during examinations The herdsman must also be qualified to operate milking machines and other equipment, troubleshooting any mechanical problems or other issues as they arise. Trains and manages dairy employees, ensuring that all tasks are completed properly and in a timely fashion. Additional duties assigned by the Farm Manager.

Qualifications:

Must be willing to start work early in the morning Must be capable of safely operating farm equipment: skid steer and tractor experience is preferred Must have ability to solve basic math problems Must have ability and willingness to adhere to stringent research protocols Must have good communication skills and interact cooperatively with coworkers Must have a valid driver's license Flexibility to adjust to changing priorities of a modern dairy farm and research institute Ability to multi-task while being detail-oriented Associates degree or bachelor's degree is preferred with a preference for degrees in dairy or animal science Must have the ability and willingness to work independently and to work some weekends, Friday/Saturday off or Sunday/Monday off. Pay is commensurate with qualifications and experience, starting at $19-$21/hour, with overtime based on a 40-hour workweek.
