Virginia Bison Co. is seeking a focused, detail-oriented, and dependable Mushroom Cultivator & Garden Master to head our indoor mushroom production, medicinal processing lab, and 5,000 sq. ft. production garden. The primary duty of this role is mushroom operations—managing daily fruiting cycles in our shipping container and turning harvested medicinal mushrooms into finished products in our lab. Prior mushroom experience is not required; training will be provided. Please have at least 2 years of production gardening experience or similar , you will act as the Garden Master—planning garden priorities and creating, assigning, and managing daily chore logs for our farm field crew.
Manage daily environmental parameters (humidity, temperature, fresh air exchange, lighting) within our shipping container grow setup.
Harvesting & Cultivation:
Execute routine substrate management, fruiting, and harvesting of culinary and medicinal mushroom varieties.
Processing Lab:
Learn and perform lab procedures for converting harvested medicinal mushrooms into extracts, tinctures, teas, or powders following strict cleanliness guidelines.
Facility Sanitation:
Maintain rigorous cleanliness, sterilization, and hygiene standards across the container and processing facility. 2.
Garden Management Garden Planning:
Oversee seasonal planting, crop rotation, harvesting, and soil health strategies for our 5,000 sq. ft. production garden. You will participate in the chore assignments that you build for the 8 people that will participate in the daily garden work. Build, assign, and track daily/weekly chore logs for the farm field crew (e.g., bed prep, weeding, tending, mulching, harvesting). Direct field crew members during garden tasks and inspect finished work to ensure standards are met. Maintain operational tracking logs for garden leadership.
Hands-on Garden Tasks:
Perform specialized cultivation work including seed starting, pruning, pest diagnostics, and yield tracking.
At least 2 years of hands-on experience in production gardening, market farming, or commercial produce operations.
Mushroom Aptitude:
No prior mycology experience required, but must possess a strong interest in medicinal mushrooms, attention to detail, and eagerness to master controlled-environment growing and lab protocols. The work is much more task focused than science lab work oriented.
Crew Leadership & Organization:
Proven track record of staying organized, planning ahead, and clearly delegating daily tasks to a field crew.
Physical Requirements:
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, work in outdoor weather conditions when in the garden, and follow cleanroom protocol when in the lab. Questions and applications via Indeed only.
