Job Description Position Summary:
Work Unit Description:
The John E. Rouse-Colorado State University Beef Improvement Center, formerly known as the One Bar Eleven Ranch, is located nine miles east of Riverside and twenty-six miles southeast of Saratoga, Wyoming along the North Platte River. The ranch consists of 6,415 acres which includes 800 acres of state lease and 880 acres of BLM land. There are 740 acres of irrigated hay meadows, 200 acres of irrigated alfalfa (pivot sprinkler), 860 acres of irrigated pasture and the remainder is dry land, sage brush, homestead and buildings. Average elevation is about 7,200 feet and annual precipitation averages 9 to 13 inches. The ranch handles about 500 cows along with replacement heifers and bulls. Purebred but nonregistered Angus cattle are owned by the Department of Animal Sciences and ranch management is supervised by personnel of the department.
Essential Job Duties:
Assist the BIC employees with all phases of ranch work, including but not limited to: fencing, irrigating, haying, cattle work, horse work, and office work/record keeping. Learn from and work with visiting professors and/or veterinarians. Maintain a positive and safe working environment for him/herself as well as fellow interns and coworkers. Maintain the living quarters, work spaces, and work vehicles to a clean and useable standard.
Conditions of Employment and Minimum Qualifications:
This is a temporary hourly position for individuals with a high school diploma or GED. Demonstrated interest in learning about modern livestock production and working on a research facility. Employees must provide documentation to their employers to show their identity and prove their authorization to work. Demonstrated communication and interpersonal skills. Ability to work a flexible work arrangement including evenings and weekend hours during peak season. Ability to meet the physical demands of this position, which include ability to lift up to 50lbs. daily and will require manual dexterity, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching and handling. Ability to work in environmental conditions to include exposure to weather and noise.
Hazards include:
working in proximity to moving, mechanical parts; working with animals both while restrained and unrestrained. Must be able to live onsite in facility provided housing. Valid driver's license or the ability to obtain a driver's license or access to a licensed driver by the employment start date.
Preferred Qualifications:
Applicants who are currently pursuing an undergraduate degree. Area of study in a relevant field.
