Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Farm Manager who is passionate about regenerative and organic agriculture to oversee the daily operations of our 1-acre urban farm. The ideal candidate will be responsible for planting and harvesting crops and managing farm activities. The core responsibilities of this role are hands-on farming and agricultural work. The role also involves producing food and hosting farm-education events for Anneliese Schools, a private school in Orange County that educates students from two years old through sixth grade. The Farm Manager may need to coordinate with the Marketing Director, Events Planner, and Farm Resource Coordinator on events and will play a key role in shaping the educational experiences offered at the farm while ensuring its sustainability.

Key Responsibilities:

Crop Management:

Planning and Design:

Develop an annual planting schedule based on seasonal crops, community needs, and educational programs. Work with local schools to determine crop preferences for their menus. Utilize crop rotation and companion planting techniques to enhance soil health and maximize yields.

Soil Preparation:

Conduct soil tests to assess nutrient levels and soil health. Amend the soil with organic materials, such as compost and natural fertilizers, to ensure optimal growing conditions. Prepare garden beds through tilling and establishing proper drainage.

Planting and Cultivation:

Oversee the planting process, ensuring optimal spacing and depth for various crops. Monitor plant growth regularly and implement practices such as thinning, weeding, and mulching to promote healthy development and reduce competition for resources.

Irrigation Management:

Design, install, and manage efficient irrigation systems (drip irrigation, soaker hoses) to ensure consistent water supply. Monitor soil moisture levels and adjust watering schedules based on weather conditions, crop requirements, and seasonal changes.

Pest and Disease Management:

Identify and manage pests and diseases using integrated pest management (IPM) practices. Implement organic solutions, such as introducing beneficial insects, utilizing natural repellents, and maintaining plant health to minimize chemical use.

Harvesting and Post-Harvest Handling:

Plan and execute timely harvesting of crops to ensure peak freshness and quality. Train staff and volunteers in proper harvesting techniques and post-harvest handling, including washing, packing, and storage to maintain product integrity.

Record Keeping:

Maintain detailed records of crop varieties, planting dates, yields, pest and disease occurrences, and any challenges faced throughout the growing season. Analyze this data to improve future crop management strategies and report on farm productivity.

Community Engagement:

Develop and maintain relationships with Anneliese Schools, community organizations, and residents to promote farm activities and initiatives. Coordinate with Nourishment Director of Anneliese Schools to understand their food production needs and generate the farm produce needed for the School menu as requested by the Nourishment Director. Facilitate farm tours, workshops, and volunteer days to engage the community and foster appreciation for local agriculture. Coordinate with Nourishment Director of Anneliese Schools on seasonal produce demands and production. Work closely with the Nourishment Director to define School menu needs by season and supply at designated timeline.

Administrative Duties:

Maintain accurate records of crop production, sales, expenses, and community outreach efforts. Oversee budgeting and financial planning for the farm, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently and effectively. Report regularly to the farm board or leadership team on farm operations, community engagement, and financial status.

Qualifications:

Hands-on experience in regenerative and organic farming, horticulture, or related fields, with a strong understanding of sustainable agricultural practices. Strong organizational and communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire diverse community members. Experience in event planning and community outreach is a plus. Proficiency in basic computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheet software. Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a hands-on approach to farm management.
