Job Description

The Seasonal Grounds Support is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, appearance, safety, and functionality of Dallas Center-Grimes Community School District grounds during the fall season and transition into winter. This position focuses primarily on mowing, trimming, leaf and debris removal, landscaping maintenance, athletic and activity area upkeep, and preparation of district grounds for winter weather.

The Seasonal Grounds Support operates grounds-maintenance equipment safely and effectively, identifies and reports maintenance concerns, and assists the Maintenance and Grounds Department in preparing outdoor facilities for winter. The position requires dependable attendance, physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to work independently while following established safety procedures.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Grounds Maintenance

Mow and maintain district lawns, athletic fields, green spaces, and other designated grounds.

Operate commercial lawn mowers, string trimmers, blowers, edgers, and other grounds-maintenance equipment.

Trim around buildings, sidewalks, curbs, fences, athletic facilities, playgrounds, trees, and other areas inaccessible to riding mowers.

Maintain a neat and well-groomed appearance of district grounds.

Remove leaves, branches, grass clippings, weeds, litter, and other debris from district property.

Assist with fall cleanup and seasonal landscaping activities.

Maintain and clean sidewalks, entrances, outdoor common areas, and other exterior surfaces as needed.

Assist with the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields and outdoor activity areas.

Fall-to-Winter Transition

Perform seasonal cleanup of district grounds as mowing activities decrease.

Assist with leaf collection, removal, and disposal.

Clear outdoor areas of branches, debris, and other materials prior to winter.

Assist with the removal, storage, or winterization of outdoor furniture, equipment, signs, hoses, and other seasonal items.

Assist with preparing landscaping, irrigation components, athletic areas, and other outdoor facilities for winter.

Identify areas requiring additional winter preparation and communicate concerns to the Director of Operations – Maintenance and Grounds.

Assist with snow and ice preparation activities as directed.

Help ensure entrances, sidewalks, parking areas, and other pedestrian areas are ready for winter conditions.

Equipment and Safety

Operate grounds-maintenance equipment in accordance with manufacturer instructions and district safety procedures.

Perform routine cleaning, inspection, and basic maintenance of grounds equipment.

Report damaged, malfunctioning, or unsafe equipment immediately.

Use appropriate personal protective equipment and follow all applicable safety procedures.

Maintain equipment, tools, and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.

Follow proper procedures for the handling, storage, and disposal of materials used in grounds maintenance.

Maintain awareness of students, staff, visitors, vehicles, and other activities while working on district property.

Report unsafe conditions, property damage, hazards, or needed repairs to the appropriate supervisor.

General Responsibilities

Work collaboratively with members of the Maintenance and Grounds Department.

Respond appropriately to changing weather and seasonal conditions.

Assist with special grounds-maintenance projects as assigned.

Provide support for district events or outdoor activities when requested.

Maintain professional and courteous interactions with students, staff, families, and community members.

Protect district property and equipment.

Perform other duties as assigned by the Director of Operations – Maintenance and Grounds.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

Knowledge of basic grounds-maintenance practices and procedures.

Ability to safely operate commercial mowing and grounds-maintenance equipment.

Ability to perform routine equipment inspections and identify obvious maintenance concerns.

Ability to work outdoors for extended periods in varying weather conditions.

Ability to perform physically demanding work, including standing, walking, bending, lifting, pushing, pulling, and repetitive movements.

Ability to follow written and verbal instructions.

Ability to work independently and prioritize assigned tasks.

Ability to work effectively as part of a team.

Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining safe and attractive district grounds.

Dependability and punctuality.

Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors and coworkers.

Ability to maintain confidentiality when appropriate.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent preferred.

Previous experience in grounds maintenance, landscaping, custodial work, agriculture, or a related field preferred.

Experience operating commercial mowing or landscaping equipment preferred.

Ability to safely perform the physical requirements of the position.

Valid driver's license required for operating district vehicles.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Work is performed primarily outdoors and may involve exposure to heat, cold, wind, rain, dust, grass, pollen, insects, and other outdoor conditions.

Work may require exposure to loud equipment and machinery.

Position requires frequent walking, standing, bending, stooping, kneeling, reaching, pushing, pulling, and lifting.

May be required to lift and carry equipment, tools, materials, and debris.

May work on uneven, wet, muddy, or otherwise challenging terrain.

Work schedule may vary based on weather, seasonal needs, and district operations.

May occasionally require early morning, evening, or weekend work based on district needs.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The employee must be able to:

Stand and walk for extended periods.

Operate mowing and grounds-maintenance equipment safely.

Bend, stoop, kneel, squat, reach, and climb as necessary.

Push and pull equipment and materials.

Lift and carry materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds independently.

Work safely around moving equipment, vehicles, students, staff, and members of the public.

Perform repetitive physical tasks for extended periods.
