Groundskeeper | Indiana University Job Description This role focuses on maintaining clean, safe, and attractive outdoor grounds across a large campus. You will perform a wide range of landscaping and groundskeeping tasks, including lawn care, plant maintenance, litter control, and seasonal snow removal, while working closely with landscape technicians on individual and group projects. Responsibilities Inspect assigned outdoor areas regularly to identify maintenance needs and ensure grounds remain clean and well-kept. Perform litter control by removing trash, debris, and other refuse from grounds, walkways, and common areas. Carry out leaf removal, including raking, blowing, and collecting leaves from lawns, beds, and pathways. Weed landscaped areas such as gardens, flowerbeds, and other planted spaces to maintain a neat appearance. Prune, trim, and shape trees, shrubs, and flowers to promote healthy growth and maintain desired aesthetics. Mow and edge lawns to maintain healthy, well-groomed turf throughout the property. Use string trimmers and other tools to maintain edges, hard-to-reach areas, and detailed landscape features. Plant new trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plant materials according to landscape plans and seasonal needs. Deadhead and thin plant materials to encourage healthy growth and continuous blooming. Assist with periodic fertilization and pre-emergent weed control under the supervision of a licensed applicator. Water lawns, plants, and landscaped areas as needed to support plant health and appearance. Operate lawnmowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, and other landscaping equipment safely and efficiently. Perform general grounds labor, including lifting, carrying, and moving materials and equipment up to 50 pounds. Clear snow and ice from walkways, sidewalks, and parking lots during winter months to maintain safe access. Respond to winter precipitation events by performing snow removal during normal operational hours and on an on-call basis outside of regular business hours as needed. Collaborate with landscape technicians and other team members on occasional group projects and special assignments. Complete other groundskeeping duties as needed to support the overall maintenance and appearance of the campus. Essential Skills Ability to perform physically demanding work, including lifting up to 50 pounds and standing, walking, bending, and kneeling for extended periods. Capability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including rain, heat, cold, and snow. Experience or strong aptitude in groundskeeping, general labor, and lawn care tasks. Skill in operating landscaping equipment such as lawnmowers, string trimmers, leaf blowers, and related tools safely. Attention to detail in maintaining clean, orderly, and attractive grounds. Reliability in adhering to a Monday-Friday schedule from 6:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., with availability for on-call winter work during heavy snow or winter precipitation events. Ability to follow directions and work under the supervision of a licensed applicator for fertilization and pre-emergent applications. The position involves maintaining multiple grounds areas across a campus, ensuring they remain clean, safe, and well-maintained. You will regularly use landscaping equipment such as lawnmowers, trimmers, and leaf blowers, and you will perform snow removal during winter months. The environment is hands-on and physical, suited to someone who enjoys working outdoors and contributing directly to the appearance and safety of the grounds. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Bloomington, IN. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $15.00 - $15.00/hr.
