NATURE OF WORK

This position works under the general supervision of the Working Foreman - Highway Division and involves skilled work which includes the safe and efficient operation of light and heavy trucks, including truck-mounted equipment, and heavy construction and maintenance equipment used on a seasonal basis. Supervision is normally received from the Working Foreman - Highway Division - who inspects work in progress and upon completion. Employees of this class may serve as a "lead man" for lower classified employees. Demonstrated ability to skillfully operate a variety of maintenance and construction equipment. General supervision may be exercised over workers of lower classifications. Assignments may be given in detail for each job or work may follow an established routine.

EXAMPLES OF WORK

•: Operates trucks of all sizes, including: heavy trucks with 4-wheel drive, on road maintenance and construction work in hauling laborers, equipment, and materials, operates truck-mounted sand spreader, asphalt spreader, and similar attachments; tractor with plowing or mowing equipment; street sweeper; self-propelled street roller, stone and gravel spreader, snow loader or other equipment used primarily on a seasonal basis; front-end loader of 1 cubic yard capacity or larger; truck-mounted backhoe; tractor-mounted backhoe-loader; and may operate other construction equipment such as a front-end loader or backhoe-loader on an emergency or temporary basis. Plans daily routes within generally assigned areas and performs related work as required including unskilled and semi-skilled laboring tasks and manual work incidental to the operation of assigned equipment. May operate a variety of tools, equipment and vehicles including chippers, tractors, sprayers, chain saws and mowers. Services equipment and makes field adjustments and repairs; performs related work as required including occasional unskilled and semi-skilled laboring assignments during slack or seasonal periods, snow plowing and manual work incidental to the operation of assigned equipment.

REQUIREMENTS OF WORK

Considerable knowledge of and skill in the principles of operation and servicing of trucks and related automotive equipment, and some knowledge of and experience in the operation and maintenance of heavy construction equipment.

Knowledge of:

traffic laws, ordinances and regulations governing equipment operations; grounds keeping and building maintenance operations; occupational hazards involved and the precautions necessary for safe operation of heavy motor-driven equipment, including operation over rough, slippery, or unstable surfaces; and the ability to understand and follow oral and/or written instructions. Ability to lift heavy objects with the ability to demonstrate physical strength and agility sufficient to perform strenuous laboring tasks under varying weather conditions. Available for "24-7" call-outs in response to emergency-related events. Must establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, and the general public.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES FROM EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II

An Equipment Operator IIIis distinguished from an Equipment Operator II in that this classification skillfully operates several types of construction and maintenance motor vehicle equipment and is regularly assigned to operate various pieces of heavy motor vehicle equipment which require a Hoisting Operators License 1C, 2A, 3A, and 4E (4G is a plus).

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or GED equivalent. Must possess a Commonwealth of Massachusetts Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and a Hoisting Operators License 1C, 2A, 3A, and 4E. Minimum of four (4) years of demonstrated experience in the operation and routine maintenance of CDL B rated equipment and dump trucks complimented by demonstrated experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
