We are looking for an experienced gardener to work at a beautiful privately owned estate in Bellport Long Island. A little less than 4 acres, the estate has an extremely diverse and layered planting scheme with a dual focus of natives and rare exotic plants. There are formal beds, large scale perennial plantings, mixed shrub borders, woodland shade gardens, topiary gardens, over 100 summer annual pots (collected from around the world) along with a small greenhouse. This is the perfect position for someone wanting to learn more about design and care of an extremely wide variety of plants The position is part time, from March through mid-December. The ideal candidate would enjoy working alone, while also demonstrating excellent communication skills. The garden is a busy place with teams that do everything from carpentry and building maintenance as well as a landscape contractor and arborist. The position requires sensitivity to the privacy of the owners. We are looking for someone who can commit to a full garden season with an opportunity for a performance review after 5 months.

RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES

Day to day garden maintenance: weeding, watering, deadheading, pruning, planting, staking/training, fertilizing, cleaning, etc. The focus of tasks shifts in accordance with the growing season Sweeping, blowing, and raking hardscapes Maintaining tools and supplies and keeping a tidy on site work & storage area Keeping accurate digital notes of garden status and tasks

NOTE:

This job does NOT include any lawn mowing or heavy machine work.

QUALIFICATIONS/REQUIREMENTS

This position requires: extensive knowledge both of plant names and their horticultural requirements experience working in a high end residential garden setting a passion and respect for all beautiful things willingness to work outdoors in all weather, both independently and as a team a temperament which thrives on a pivoting between a variety of tasks ranging from repetitive manual labor to delicate, aesthetic problem solving.
