Job Description
Job Summary Jefferson Township is a local government located in northeast Franklin County, serving an area of approximately 15.34 square miles with 15,000 residents and 50+ businesses in a growing suburban environment. Residents value the Township's rural character, quiet atmosphere, and preserved open space, alongside convenient access to major regional amenities. The majority of the Township is unincorporated, meaning Jefferson Township serves as the primary provider for local government services in those areas. The Township's Service Department maintains more than 57 miles of roadways and associated infrastructure, including signage, rights-of-way, berms, curbs, sidewalks, and drainage systems. The Department also maintains four Township parks, public grounds, and five cemeteries, including the operation of two active cemeteries. Jefferson Township maintains a small-team environment where employees take pride in providing high-quality public service and collaborating across a wide variety of projects. We are currently seeking a full-time Service Crew I employee to help maintain Township roads, parks, cemeteries, stormwater infrastructure, and facilities. This position provides hands-on experience with a variety of equipment, including zero-turn mowers, small dump trucks, trailers, and other light equipment and tools. Employees will develop practical skills in grounds maintenance, roadway and stormwater maintenance, cemetery operations, and other public works services while building experience in local government. Responsibilities and Duties Provides snow and ice removal using vehicles that do not require a CDL. Performs groundskeeping duties, including mowing, trimming, weeding, and planting. Maintains, cleans, and repairs park facilities, including playgrounds, shelter houses and restrooms. Assists with road maintenance, including traffic control, pothole repair, berm maintenance, street sign installation, and tree trimming. Conducts stormwater maintenance, including reclaiming ditches, and repairing and replacing storm tiles and catch basins. Assists with open and closing grave plots for cemetery burials and cremations and pouring of headstone foundations. Operates and maintains a variety of equipment used in roadway, grounds, cemetery, and stormwater maintenance, including dump trucks, snow plows, zero-turn mowers, weed eaters, and related equipment. Qualifications and Skills A valid State of Ohio Class D (regular) driver's license and ability to maintain insurability under the Township's property and liability coverage is required. High School Diploma or GED required. Knowledge of, or ability to learn, the materials, methods, and safety precautions used in road and grounds maintenance. Experience operating equipment including small dump trucks, snow plows, and zero turn mowers, and in pulling/backing trailers preferred. Ability to perform a wide range of duties, often switching between tasks of varying nature and adjusting priorities quickly as needed. Strong interpersonal skills necessary to effectively interact with Township staff, elected and appointed officials, and the general public. Special Conditions This position involves year-round outdoor work in varying weather conditions and requires the operation of vehicles and heavy equipment. Work Schedule The primary work schedule is 7:00 am. to 3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday. Irregular hours will also be required, including nights, holidays, and weekends. Overtime, call-in, and on-call opportunities are available for snow and ice operations, emergency response, and seasonal work.
