WEST STANISLAUS IRRIGATION DISTRICT JOB CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION MAINTENANCE WORKER

General Job Description Under general supervision, performs a variety of routine to skilled maintenance, repair, construction, and physical work involving the operation and maintenance of irrigation distribution facilities, including lift pumps. Performs pump repair and maintenance and other related duties as assigned. Prerequisite Qualifications Any combination of education and experience that provides the knowledge and abilities necessary to successfully perform the duties of the position. Knowledge of the capabilities and operation of construction tools and equipment. Ability to obtain and maintain a valid Class C California driver's license, maintain a satisfactory driving record, and remain insurable by the District's insurance carrier. Must have a good driving record, demonstrated by freedom from multiple or serious traffic violations or accidents for at least two (2) years. Ability to learn the operation of the District's irrigation distribution facilities. Ability to learn the safe operation of District pumps. Ability to learn and follow District rules and regulations.

Basic Work Hours Maintenance Schedule:

Monday-Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Work hours are subject to change at the discretion of management, the Supervisor, or the General Manager to ensure the safe and reliable operation of District facilities. Essential Job Duties Operates the canal system by visually inspecting canal water levels, removing debris, setting spill boards, reading and recording flow meter readings, operating pump controls, recording water measurements and flow, manually operating water control valves, and operating other related control structures. Operates and maintains pumping plants by visually inspecting pumps and motors, checking pump oilers and motor oil levels, removing debris from trash racks, and reporting problems to the Watermaster or, in their absence, the supervisor on duty. Communicates with other District employees to understand and respond to canal water needs. Assists with the construction, replacement, and repair of District distribution facilities, including pipelines, spills, measuring boxes, control gates, pumps, and motors. Operates a variety of construction and related equipment during the repair and replacement of irrigation facilities. Maintains an Employee Performance Evaluation score of 7.0 or greater to remain in this job classification. Examples of Duties Assists with a variety of maintenance, repair, and construction work on District facilities. Performs trench excavation and backfill work. Performs concrete, asphalt, and pavement repairs. Operates pneumatic-, hydraulic-, and gasoline-powered tools, including pavement breakers, clay spades, tampers, vibrators, and compactors. Performs skilled maintenance, repair, and construction work within an assigned work area. Responds to emergency repair requests and emergency requests for water delivery changes. Controls water flow and levels in the Main Lift Canal by turning pumps on and off and adjusting gates and weir boards. Sets valves, checks meters, and measures water flow, making necessary adjustments to correct for surges, excess water, and low water levels. Identifies equipment malfunctions in water delivery systems, makes immediate repairs when appropriate, or notifies other District staff of required repairs. Records and updates operational and maintenance information on a daily basis. Knowledge of Tools and equipment used for valve adjustment and repair. Tools and equipment used for water measurement. Basic use of power tools and construction materials. Operation of motor vehicles. Operation of light construction equipment, including front-end loaders, small track loaders, and dump trucks. Proper workplace safety standards and practices. Ability to Perform heavy physical labor, including work in confined spaces. Deliver the proper amount of irrigation water in a timely manner. Safely operate motor vehicles. Perform accurate arithmetic calculations. Complete daily information forms accurately and legibly. Operate hand and power tools and equipment safely and effectively. Read meters, measure water flow, make water delivery adjustments, and perform routine valve maintenance. Analyze problems within water delivery systems and take appropriate corrective action. Deal tactfully and courteously with irrigation customers and the public. Follow oral and written directions. Establish and maintain effective and cooperative working relationships with District staff, customers, and the public. Typical Physical Activities Operates District vehicles while operating, monitoring, and maintaining irrigation water delivery systems. Frequently carries, pushes, pulls, reaches, and lifts equipment and parts weighing up to 50 pounds and, infrequently, up to 100 pounds. Stoops, kneels, crouches, crawls, and climbs while performing field labor, water delivery work, and maintenance of District facilities. Requires close and distance vision, color perception, writing ability, hearing, clear speech, and the ability to use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, and controls. Walks over uneven ground and sits or stands for extended periods. Requires upper- and lower-body flexibility. Requires hearing and vision within normal ranges. Stands and walks for extended periods, periodically while wearing rubber boots. Communicates orally with District staff in face-to-face and one-to-one settings. Maintains a high level of concentration and attention to detail for extended periods to ensure safe, efficient, and productive operations. Environmental Demands Works outdoors frequently in a variety of weather conditions, including cold, wet, windy, and temperatures exceeding 100°F. Very rarely works indoors in a temperature-controlled environment. May be exposed to fumes from internal combustion engines. May be exposed to dust generated by construction operations, wind, and neighboring agricultural operations. May be exposed to fumes during metal brazing, welding, and cutting operations. May be exposed to pesticides, primarily herbicides used by the District, as well as pesticides applied by neighboring agricultural operations. Experiences moderate exposure to noise and vibration from pumping plants, construction tools, and equipment.
