About Middleburg Humane Foundation (MHF) Middleburg Humane Foundation is a non-profit, no-kill shelter located on a 23-acre farm in Marshall, Virginia. We rescue, rehabilitate, and rehome a wide range of animals — from cats and dogs to equine, livestock, and pocket pets. In 2025, we impacted over 2,000 animals, performed more than 1,600 surgical procedures, and facilitated over 900 adoptions. Our programs include intake and adoption services, a Community Cats Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program, food assistance, humane education, internships, and extensive volunteer opportunities. MHF operates a full-service veterinary clinic on site, which provides both routine and advanced medical care for our shelter population and animals from partner non-profit organizations. Job Summary We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate Animal Care Technician to join our team. The ideal candidate will be responsible for providing daily care to all animals residing in the shelter, including feeding, watering, cleaning enclosures, monitoring their health, exercising them, and providing enrichment activities as well as working with the adoption team to find suitable adoption outcomes.
Working Relationship:
This position reports to the Animal Care Tech Manager.
Responsibilities:
  • Perform daily cleaning of all animal spaces to include kennels, cat rooms, small mammal areas, community cat room, isolation and quarantine areas following proper disease protocol using MHF's Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's) to ensure a clean sterile environment as often as necessary.
  • Keep Supervisor informed of animal behavior, health, stress, or other concerns and weighing animals as needed when there are medical concerns.
  • Always maintain a humane and caring attitude toward animals while using proper handling and restraint.
  • Ensure each animal is comfortable and always has access to clean and dry bedding.
  • Stock all shelter/cleaning supplies or other related items as needed.
  • Spot-clean kennels and public areas throughout the day as needed; assist with special cleaning projects as needed.
  • Walk dogs and provide enrichment activities throughout the day.
  • Record daily activities for dogs and cats on the daily kennel communication sheets or however it is deemed to make such recordings.
  • Assist in prompt and proper receiving of new animals brought into the shelter or animals returning from veterinary appointments and ensure every animal has a kennel name card in place.
  • Assists the adoption team in introducing animals to potential adopters.
  • Works cooperatively and provides directions to volunteers that are providing their time to help with animal care duties.
  • Communication of maintenance needed in relation to animal housing areas and facilities.
  • Transport animals to vet appointments or events as needed.
  • Work with equine or barnyard animals as needed or directed.
  • Participating in various events as needed or required. i.e., the annual Christmas parade.
  • Other duties as assigned by management.
  • Always representing Middleburg Humane Foundation in a professional manner.
Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Compassion for animals.
  • Excellent communication skills.
  • Strong people skills.
  • Basic office and computer skills
  • Physically strong and dexterous, ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Available to work flexible hours, weekends, and holidays.
Physical requirements/
Work Environment:
  • Work is performed in a shelter setting both indoors and outdoors.
  • Exposure to various weather conditions when working outdoors.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, kneeling, walking, and standing while performing job duties.
  • Often requires lifting and carrying materials or animals weighing 40-60#.
  • Subject to animal bites, scratches, and excrement while handling animals of questionable temperaments.
  • Consistently exposed to animal allergens.
  • Exposure to disinfectant solutions when cleaning.
  • Rabies Vaccinated - will provide vaccination.
  • Fear Free Certified - will provide training.
