Overview Handybear is hiring laborers to support landscape construction crews across
DuPage County:
paver patios, retaining walls, and drainage installation, plus the site work that keeps those jobs moving. Several openings. What you'll do General construction laborer work. Dig and trench for drainage lines and footings, spread and compact aggregate base, screed bedding, and set pavers and block under a crew lead's direction on patios and retaining walls, backfilling walls with drainage stone and geogrid as directed.
Also:
unloading and moving material, mixing and spreading materials, demo, wheelbarrow work, work with mini excavators and mini skid steers, site cleanup and protection, and loading trucks and trailers at the yard and on site. You'll learn to run a plate compactor and other crew equipment. Most days you're working as part of a crew, and as you build experience and trust, you'll take on some jobs solo. The physical side Lifting up to 75 pounds, with repetitive 40 to 60 pound loads for hours at a stretch. Kneeling and squatting for extended periods, on your feet 8-plus hours on uneven, often muddy ground. Illinois summer heat and winter cold. Noise, dust, and vibration from saws and compactors. What you need Entry-level okay. Prior landscape or construction labor experience is a big plus, especially patio, wall, or drainage work. Valid driver's license. Reliable transportation to job sites across DuPage County. Some jobs you'll ride out with the crew from a yard or meeting point, others you'll drive straight to the site. No truck or trailer required. No tools required, we supply the equipment. Bring your own boots (steel toe where the site requires it) and weather-appropriate gear. Bilingual English/Spanish a plus, not required. Background check required. Pay and structure 1099 independent contractor. Pay starts at $900 to $1,125 per week depending on experience and output. You handle your own taxes, no benefits during the contract period. You have job selection ability, meaning you can accept or decline individual jobs as a subcontractor. There's a path toward more skilled, higher-paying work as you build experience with us.
