Learn a specialized trade. Have you personally laid brick, worked from construction or fabrication drawings, and measured and cut materials to fit accurately? We would like to hear about your work. Upton Industries is hiring an Industrial Bricklayer / Refractory Mason to help construct custom industrial furnaces and thermal processing equipment in our small fabrication shop. You will work indoors year-round alongside our two experienced bricklayers and other skilled fabricators. This is precision, hands-on building work—not volume production . We value careful layout, accurate cutting, a good fit, and pride in the finished product. Industrial or refractory experience is a plus, but it is not required. Relevant hands-on trade experience is required. We can teach our specialized methods; you must bring a demonstrated foundation in building things accurately. What experience are we looking for?

Experienced bricklayers and masons:

Our target is at least two years of personally laying brick, block, or refractory materials. Candidates with substantially more experience are encouraged to apply. Tell us what you have built and which parts of the work you performed yourself.

Candidates with less bricklaying experience:

We will consider applicants with strong transferable experience in carpentry or another building trade that regularly involves reading drawings, performing layout, making precise cuts, and fitting materials together. Your application must explain how your experience prepares you for this work. Experience limited to landscaping, pouring or finishing concrete porches and slabs, material handling, or general construction labor does not meet the requirements of this position. Assisting a bricklayer is not the same as personally laying brick; please distinguish between the two when describing your experience. An interest in learning is important, but it does not replace relevant hands-on skills. What you will do Measure, lay out, cut, fit, and install refractory brick and related materials in industrial furnace assemblies. Read and follow blueprints and fabrication drawings. Check your work for accuracy and make adjustments to meet specifications. Work with experienced bricklayers, fabricators, and welders to produce high-quality custom equipment. Skills you must bring Accurate measuring and layout: Read a tape measure correctly and transfer dimensions to the work.

Practical cutting and fitting experience:

Explain what materials you have worked with, which tools you used, and how you achieved the required fit.

Drawing-reading ability:

Use dimensions and details from a blueprint or fabrication drawing to complete a task—not simply recognize what a drawing looks like. Careful workmanship and willingness to learn: Follow instructions, ask questions when needed, accept feedback, and contribute to a small team. A high school diploma or equivalent is required, along with English-language skills sufficient to understand and communicate about work instructions. Why join our team?
