At North Smithfield Fence , we're a close-knit, family-owned local business that takes a lot of pride in building top-tier cedar fencing for our Rhode Island and Massachusetts neighbors. We value quality craftsmanship, practical problem-solving, and a down-to-earth work environment where everyone's ideas count. We are not looking for a fence installer; we are looking for a creative carpenter, maker, or skilled craftsman to join our shop on a flexible, part-time basis . Whether you're a maker looking for steady income alongside your other creative gigs, or an active retiree who loves working with wood and keeping busy, this position offers steady, flexible hours in a relaxed shop atmosphere. .
What Makes This Role Different Zero Fence Experience Needed:
If you know your way around woodworking tools, measuring tapes, and pneumatic guns, we'll easily teach you how to build our fence panels.
Creative Cedar Projects:
We accumulate plenty of high-quality spare cedar. We want someone who gets excited about turning extra wood into cool side projects, custom accents, or smart shop fixtures.
Organize & Optimize:
We welcome your eyes and ideas. If you see a better way to store materials, build a jig, or streamline shop operations, you'll have the freedom to make it happen.
Flexible Hours:
We know life gets busy. We're open to structuring your shifts in flexible 2
  • to 4-hour blocks (for example, 2:00 PM
  • 5:00 PM daily, or consistent morning/afternoon shifts, or on a rotation
  • whatever works for you as long as you get the job done).

Key Responsibilities Cedar Panel Fabrication:
Learn our build styles and craft high-quality wood fence panels and gates using standard shop tools and pneumatic nail guns.
Shop & Scrap Management:
Keep the workshop organized, clean, and safe. Turn spare cedar off-cuts into creative, useful projects or products.
End-of-Day Shop Care:
Depending on your schedule, assist with light end-of-day shop maintenance—sweeping up, securing tools, topping off truck fuel tanks, and helping clean or check equipment before closing down. .
What We're Looking For Carpentry or Woodworking Experience:
You love building things with your hands, take pride in clean work, and know woodworking safety. A "Scrappy" &
Organized Mindset:
You naturally see where tools belong, enjoy organizing physical spaces, and like finding efficient solutions to everyday shop challenges. Bonus Skills (Nice to Have, But Definitely Not Required): (a) Welding (handy for occasional gate frames), and (b) Forklift operation (we have team members who can, but we're happy to train you if you'd like to learn!).
Reliable & Self-Motivated:
Someone who takes initiative and works well without someone hovering over their shoulder. .
Schedule & Perks Flexible Part-Time Hours:
Approximately 12 to 20 hours/week. We are happy to negotiate daily start and end times to fit your personal schedule or other work commitments.
Seasonal Schedule:
Our primary shop season runs roughly from March 1st through December 20th . If we find creative ways to stay busy through the winter, we may continue through this time.
