PRIMARY PURPOSE:
The role of the Mechanic Assistant is to be responsible for performing any duties or tasks directed of him, which will assist the mechanic in the performance of his assigned duties.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education/Certification:
High School Diploma or GED Valid Texas Commercial Driver's license with Passenger & School Bus Endorsements (Class B)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Ability to diagnose minor mechanical problems and perform repairs with supervision Ability to operate tools and equipment involved in vehicle repair Ability to lift heavy equipment and vehicle parts up to 50 lbs. Ability to pass required bus driver safety training Ability to operate bus Ability to pass alcohol and drug test Acceptable driving record
Experience:
One year experience in minor vehicle repair and maintenance
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Removes old parts needing replacement from vehicles. Obtains quickly any special tool the mechanic may need. Washes and cleans parts. Cleans and sweeps shop area (inside and out). Operates hydraulic lift jacks for the mechanic. Sweeps and cleans work stall. Fixes flats. Removes wheels - bearings and brake assemblies. Brings vehicles needing maintenance work from the parking areas. Assists the mechanic in the lifting and placement of heavy parts such as transmission and differentials. Washes vehicles. Drive a route when necessary Observes safety practices at all times in performing duties. Performs all duties in a safe manner to avoid injury to oneself and/or to others. Performs other related duties as assigned.
EQUIPMENT USED
Automotive diagnostic equipment, wheel balancing equipment, tire repairing equipment, small hand tools, drills, drill press, grinder, air-powered tools, welding torch, torque wrench, jacks and lift equipment. School bus and district vehicles.
Moderate walking, standing, climbing, heavy lifting, carrying, stooping, bending, kneeling, and reaching. Work outside and inside, around moving objects, vehicles, and machinery with moving parts. Exposed to dampness and humidity, toxic chemicals, exhaust fumes, gasoline, and diesel fuel.
