Job Description

Job Description A client in the Indianapolis area seeking a Field Engineer for a top commercial concrete construction client. This individual will play a critical role in supporting construction operations by leading project layout and line & grade activities. The ideal candidate has hands-on construction experience and understands how buildings come together in the field, not just how to operate surveying equipment. They will work closely with field leadership, foremen, and craft teams to ensure projects are built accurately and efficiently through precise layout execution, control management, and drawing interpretation. This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to grow their career into Foreman, Superintendent, or other Field Leadership positions while developing into a high-level layout resource over the next 3-5 years.
Day-to-Day:
  • Interpret construction drawings and execute layout activities
  • Perform line & grade work and establish project control points
  • Utilize robotic total stations, transit levels, lasers, and other layout equipment
  • Import CAD points into layout software and manage field controls
  • Verify locations, dimensions, and elevations before construction activities
  • Support Foremen and Field Leaders with layout and grade information
  • Maintain layout documentation, as-builts, and field records
  • Coordinate layout activities with project schedules and milestones
  • Identify drawing discrepancies and support RFI/design clarification efforts
  • Calibrate and maintain layout equipment
  • Communicate layout updates and project challenges to leadership

  • 2 years of line & grade/layout experience
  • Experience operating a robotic total station
  • Ability to perform layout with and without robotic equipment
  • Construction background in concrete or related trades (masonry, structural steel, dirt works interior framing, stud framing)
  • Ability to read and interpret construction drawings
  • Experience with elevations, control points, and field layout
  • Lead Carpenter or Crew Lead background
  • Experience with CAD point imports and layout software
