Job Description
The Parks & Recreation Laborer performs daily, hands-on parks maintenance, horticultural tasks, grounds maintenance, planting of flowerbeds and hanging baskets in accordance with approved Parks and Recreation Division maintenance and operation procedures, safety regulations, and grooming standards. Perform minor facility construction improvement, repair, and maintenance. Plant and maintain flowerbeds, hanging baskets, shrubs, trees, lawns, and fields. Operate manual digging tools, hand tools, or power tools. Perform sanitation maintenance including litter collection, restroom cleaning, and park area clean-up. Maintain turf areas including mowing, weed trimming, irrigation, and fertilization. Report acts of vandalism and make repair to property and facilities. Operate City owned vehicles. Perform other duties and special projects as assigned. Aptitude to operate or learn to operate small maintenance equipment i.e., small tractors, riding lawn mowers, weed trimmers. Aptitude to learn to perform preventative maintenance of small equipment. Effectively use maintenance hand tools i.e., shovels, picks, and rakes or ability to learn to do so. Previous facility maintenance experience desired. Must be highly motivated, works well as a team member, follow instructions and complete tasks independently under pressure of time deadlines as needed. Communicate clearly by voice on radio, cell phone, as well as in person. Knowledge of annuals and perennials is helpful. Knowledge of planting, watering, and deadheading of flowers is helpful. High school graduate, GED, or equivalency preferred. Must be 18 years of age. Must possess a valid State of Alaska driver's license and be able to operate a motor vehicle. Must be willing to provide a current (dated within 30 days of request) driving record from the State.
