JOB SUMMARY
Maintain the grounds of the Birmingham Airport Authority by performing manual and semi-skilled labor duties to assure groomed, clean, and well managed appearance of the airport and surrounding properties.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
Groom and maintain grass and planted areas by cutting grass, edging sidewalks and curbs, fertilizing, planting, sodding, and removing dead leaves or other vegetation, and any trash and debris from the planted areas. Control weeds, insects, and fungus by spraying appropriate chemicals. Groom trees and shrubs by pruning and trimming. Irrigate and water vegetation by setting hoses and sprinklers; repairing PCP pipe as needed. Keep airport grounds free of debris. Clear and maintain storm drains, ditches, utility lines, and other areas which must remain clean by using swing blades, power saws, brush axes, and other appropriate equipment. Assist in maintaining airport security by putting up, repairing, and replacing fence. Assist with maintaining ramp and street areas including but not limited to using asphalt to patch potholes, leveling cracks or depressions, and other similar maintenance to assure surfaces are suitable for any necessary travel. Assist with setting up meeting arrangements and office space by moving furniture and equipment. Assist skilled craft co-workers as needed. Other duties as needed or assigned.
REQUIRED EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION
(S) & EXPERIENCE High School Diploma or GED equivalent appreciated. Previous experience with landscaping desired. Experience being a team player who jumps in to help where needed is essential.
REQUIRED SKILLS, ABILITIES & COMPETENCIES
Ability and willingness to use a variety of hand and power tools to perform landscaping and other job duties. Previous experience in areas of general labor outdoors such as clearing and maintaining storm drains or other facilities appreciated, including asphalt repair. Previous experience building and maintaining fences also appreciated. Previous experience in areas of general labor in meeting room and office environment also appreciated. Ability to work without direct supervision and make decisions about the landscaping required to support the groomed appearance of the airport and surrounding properties. Ability to communicate orally and in-writing in English with co-workers and supervisors necessary. Physical stamina and general ability to work full eight-hour shift doing highly physical work.
WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Required to stand, walk, and do physical work a significant portion of each shift. Must use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, reach with hands and arms, bend and kneel. Must be able to lift at least 25 pounds. Consistent exposure to environmental conditions outdoors in all weather conditions, including but not limited to hot and cold temperatures, humidity, and precipitation. Will be exposed to airfield traffic, fumes/noxious odors, dusts, pollen, and chemicals; will frequently be in a noisy environment. Must be able to work any of the three shifts at the airport (6:00 a.m.-2:30 p.m., 2:00 pm-10:30 pm; 10:00 p.m. to 6:30 a.m.) as needed. Must have excellent attendance.
