Job Title:
Environmental Air Quality Technician Job Description This role involves performing air quality monitoring at landfill sites by walking pre-defined grid routes and collecting readings using specialized equipment. You will wear backpack monitoring devices and use hand-held GPS units to document your path, placing flags at locations where readings indicate specific conditions. The position is physically demanding, requires extensive walking on steep and uneven terrain in outdoor environments, and involves regular travel to multiple landfill locations within the East Bay area. Responsibilities Walk predetermined grid routes at landfill sites to monitor air quality levels throughout the area. Carry and operate backpack air monitoring equipment weighing approximately 30-50 pounds during the workday. Use hand-held GPS units to track and document routes accurately while on site. Monitor air quality sensors continuously and respond promptly when alarms or indicators sound. Place small landscape flags at specific locations where the monitoring sensor signals a reading, then continue along the route. Work on steep grades and uneven landfill terrain for 6-8 hours per day in a dirty, dusty, and odorous environment. Follow established procedures and protocols for air quality inspection and data collection. Perform basic troubleshooting of monitoring equipment and report any issues or malfunctions. Complete simple data entry or documentation related to readings, routes, and flagged locations as needed. Collaborate with the Site Emissions Monitoring (SEM) Lead and other SEM Technicians as part of a field team. Adhere to all safety guidelines, including consistent use of required personal protective equipment. Travel to various landfill sites across the East Bay region, including the Fremont-Fairfield-Pleasanton area. Essential Skills Ability to perform physically demanding work, including walking on steep grades and uneven terrain for 6-8 hours per day. Capability to carry and operate backpack monitoring equipment weighing approximately 30-50 pounds. Comfort working in outdoor environments that are dirty, dusty, smelly, and exposed to the elements. Willingness to work in all weather conditions, including cold, wet, rainy, and hot summer weather. Basic aptitude for using hand-held GPS units and following pre-defined routes. Ability to follow detailed instructions and established procedures for air quality monitoring and inspection. Reliable attendance and punctuality for early morning day shifts starting between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 a.m. Strong attention to detail when responding to sensor alerts and placing flags at designated locations. Capacity to work effectively as part of a small field team under the direction of a SEM Lead. No prior experience or certifications required; open to candidates with transferable skills. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Modesto, CA. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $22.00/hr. Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
