Job Title:
Traveling Construction Laborer Job Description This role is for a skilled construction laborer who supports tunnel and underground work on a variety of construction projects and is willing to travel regularly. You will contribute to projects across sectors such as water and wastewater, mining, transportation, commercial and residential building, energy, tunneling, marine, and more. The position favors individuals with at least three years of commercial construction experience, a strong work ethic, and a willingness to learn and grow on the job. Responsibilities Assist with tunnel construction activities and related underground work at various project sites. Perform general construction labor tasks, including concrete work and use of shovels and other hand tools. Support water and wastewater, mining, transportation, commercial, residential, energy, tunneling, and marine construction projects as assigned. Work safely and effectively in trenches and narrow ditches, following safe excavation practices to prevent cave-ins. Handle physical tasks such as standing for long periods, bending, kneeling, and lifting, transporting, or placing heavy pipes, materials, and tools. Collaborate closely with heavy equipment operators, pipefitters, and supervisors to align, grade, and join pipes correctly. Follow instructions from site supervisors and adhere to all safety policies and procedures. Maintain a clean and organized work area and properly care for tools and equipment. Travel to different job sites as required and adapt to varying project needs and conditions. Contribute to a team-oriented environment by communicating clearly and supporting coworkers to complete tasks on schedule. Essential Skills Skilled construction labor experience supporting tunnel and underground work. Experience across multiple construction project types, including water and wastewater, mining, transportation, commercial building, residential building, energy, tunneling, and marine projects. 3+ years of commercial construction experience preferred. Ability to perform concrete work and effectively use shovels and other basic construction tools. Strong work ethic with a reliable, safety-conscious approach to daily tasks. Willingness to learn new techniques and follow direction from supervisors and experienced team members. Ability to work outdoors in all seasons, with exposure to sun, rain, heat, and cold. Physical capability to stand for long periods, bend, kneel, and lift or move heavy pipes, tools, and materials. Ability to work safely in trenches and narrow ditches, adhering to excavation safety practices. Effective teamwork and communication skills when collaborating with heavy equipment operators, pipefitters, and supervisors. Additional Skills & Qualifications Previous experience with underground utility work is a plus. Experience aligning, grading, and joining pipes in trench or underground environments. Comfort working on a traveling schedule and adapting to different job sites and project types. Demonstrated reliability and consistency in meeting project timelines and work expectations. Work Environment Work takes place outdoors at active construction sites throughout the year, with exposure to varying weather conditions such as sun, rain, heat, and cold. The role is physically demanding, requiring frequent standing, bending, kneeling, and lifting, transporting, or placing heavy pipes, materials, and tools. Much of the work occurs in trenches and narrow ditches, where safe excavation practices are critical to prevent cave-ins and ensure a secure work area. You will operate in a collaborative field environment, working closely with heavy equipment operators, pipefitters, and supervisors to complete underground and tunnel-related tasks. The setting is hands-on, fast-paced, and safety-focused, with an emphasis on teamwork and clear communication. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Asheville, NC. Pay and Benefits The pay range for this position is $20.00 - $25.00/hr. Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
